iPhone 15 Plus Back Glass

Before You Begin

Warning

  • Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

  • Read Broken Glass Safety before you begin.

  • Improper replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions may cause malfunctions. Additionally, wireless charging may appear slow or the iPhone may not charge properly. These events could result in injury, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.

Tools

  • 6.7-inch repair tray

  • Adhesive cutter

  • Adjustable heated display pocket

  • Adhesive removal tool

  • Camera cap

  • Display press

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

Caution

  • This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, follow the instructions to initiate System Configuration.

  • To avoid damaging the lenses, don’t touch the camera assembly or nearby parts.

Important

Read Heated Display Removal Fixture if you’re setting up the fixture for the first time.

Removal

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout.

  2. Use a torque driver and the Torx security bit to remove the two security screws, one from each side of the USB-C connector. Set aside the screws.

  3. Flip the switch on the back of the heated display removal fixture to turn it on. The internal fan will turn on. Wait for a checkmark to appear on the screen.

    • Note: If an error code appears on the screen, turn off the fixture and turn it back on.

  4. Take the iPhone out of the repair tray.

  5. Position the iPhone in the bottom right corner of the adjustable heated display pocket with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the bottom of the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t scratch the iPhone as you insert it into the adjustable heated display pocket.

  6. Press the areas shown to hold the iPhone in position. Then turn the knob at the bottom of the pocket clockwise to secure the iPhone in place.

    • Caution: Don’t overtighten the knob.

    • Important: Ensure that the iPhone is centered between the brass bands on the inside of the pocket. If it isn’t, turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen the bands. Remove the iPhone and then repeat steps 5 and 6.

  7. Put on the heat-resistant gloves. Align the cutout on the bottom of the pocket with the rail on the fixture. Slide the pocket with the iPhone onto the rail on the fixture.

    • Warning: Don’t insert the pocket into the fixture without wearing the heat-resistant gloves.

  8. Slide the pocket into the fixture until the pocket clicks into place.

    • Note: The screen on the fixture will turn red and the timer will count down from 2 minutes while the pocket heats to the correct temperature. When the timer shows 0, the fixture will start to beep and the screen will turn green.

  9. Turn the knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup as close to the iPhone as possible without touching the iPhone.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the iPhone, don’t turn the knob before the timer ends.

    • Note: The fixture will beep until the suction cup is lowered.

  10. Grasp the handle and slide the suction cup straight out until the edge of the suction cup aligns with the bottom edge of the back glass (1).

  11. Turn the black knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup onto the back glass (2). Then flip down the handle on the suction cup to secure the suction cup to the back glass (3).

    • Caution: Don’t let the suction cup hang over the edge of the back glass or you may damage the iPhone. If damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

    • Important: After the suction cup is lowered onto the iPhone, the screen will begin a 15 minute countdown. When the timer shows 0, the heated display removal fixture will turn off. Ensure that you complete steps 12 and 13 within this time frame.

  12. Slowly turn the black knob on the fixture counterclockwise until the back glass begins to separate from the enclosure.

    • Important: If you don’t see a separation between the back glass and the enclosure immediately, wait 30 seconds. If you still don’t see a separation, turn the silver part of the knob counterclockwise a quarter turn until the back glass begins to separate from the enclosure.

    • Caution: Only turn the silver knob if you haven’t seen a gap after waiting for 30 seconds.

  13. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the back glass and the enclosure. Run the cutter between the back glass and the enclosure to the right and left as shown until the glass partially releases from the enclosure.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the flex cables, don’t tilt the back glass more than 5 degrees.

  14. Flip up the handle to release the suction cup. Then gently slide the flat end of the black stick under the edge of the suction cup to release it from the back glass.

    • Caution: Don’t turn the knob. Turning the knob may damage the flex cables.

  15. Press the eject button on the side of the pocket to release the pocket from the fixture.

  16. Hold both sides of the pocket and slide it straight out of the fixture.

  17. Turn the knob on the adjustable heated display pocket counterclockwise until you can remove the iPhone from the pocket. Hold the edge of the iPhone and gently remove the iPhone from the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the camera lenses.

  18. Place the iPhone into the repair tray with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout. Remove the gloves.

  19. Slide the back glass slightly toward the bottom of the iPhone.

  20. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter into the top of the iPhone between the back glass and the enclosure. Hold the adhesive cutter at a 45-degree angle. Start at the middle and cut along the sides and tops of the iPhone until the back glass is free.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the flex cables, don’t tilt the back glass more than 5 degrees.

  21. Insert the repair tray suction cups into the slots in the repair tray. Place the camera cap next to the tray.

    • Note: The icon on the bottom of the tray shows the direction to tilt up the back glass and the correct side to place the suction cups.

  22. Tilt up the back glass toward the suction cups and place the camera cap on the camera. Press the top and bottom edges of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Caution: Don’t damage the back glass flex cables as you tilt up the back glass.

    • Warning

      • If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

      • If the back glass is broken, inspect the enclosure. If there are shards of glass in the enclosure, put on the safety glasses with side shields and cut- resistant gloves. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the shards. Then use ethanol or IPA wipes to remove all remaining shards from the adhesive on the perimeter of the enclosure. Vacuum all shards of glass from the workspace.

  23. Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove two trilobe screws from the lower cowling. Set aside the screws.

  24. Use ESD-safe tweezers to slightly push the lower cowling toward the top of the enclosure to unhook it, then tilt up the lower cowling and slide it out toward the Taptic Engine. Save the cowling for reassembly.

  25. Use ESD-safe tweezers to lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector.

    • Caution

      • The battery flex has strong adhesive under it. Don’t tear the battery flex cable while removing it.

      • You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

  26. Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove the trilobe screw from the upper cowling. Set aside the screw.

  27. Use the black stick to lightly press the top of the upper cowling to move it about 1 mm toward the bottom of the enclosure and release the top hook on the cowling. Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the cowling from the bottom and remove it. Save the cowling for reassembly.

  28. Lift the end of the back glass flex cable off the connector.

  29. Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  30. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

  31. Use the adhesive removal tool or the black stick to lift the adhesive from the enclosure. Use the ESD-safe tweezers to pull the adhesive. Repeat this process until all the adhesive is removed from the perimeter of the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the camera assembly, TrueDepth camera grounding springs, or nearby parts.

  32. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  33. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the edges of the back glass.

    • Caution: Don’t use the adhesive removal tool to clean the back glass.

Reassembly

Caution

Ensure that you’ve removed all adhesive residue from the back glass and enclosure before you apply the replacement back glass adhesive.

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the USB-C connector facing the cutout.

    • Important: If you’re installing a replacement back glass, peel the protective liner from the top and underside of it.

    • Warning: Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which can damage the battery and cause safety issues.

  2. Align the replacement back glass adhesive over the enclosure. Ensure that the top hole of the adhesive aligns over the camera.

  3. The replacement back glass adhesive has a top release liner, a middle release liner, and a bottom release liner. Grasp the tab on the bottom release liner. Then slowly pull the bottom release liner out from under the adhesive while pressing the adhesive onto the enclosure

    • Caution: Remove the camera cap just before you pull away the remaining third of the bottom release liner. Replace the camera cap after the adhesive is in place.

    • Important: Don’t remove the top release liner yet.

    • Note: The replacement display adhesive for your model may look different from the illustration, but the steps are the same.

  4. Inspect the back glass adhesive to ensure that it’s positioned on the shelf of the enclosure. If the adhesive isn’t correctly positioned on the enclosure, repeat removal steps 31 through 33. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 4.

  5. Use a black stick to adhere the back glass adhesive to the enclosure. Move around the edge of the enclosure at least 3 times to ensure the adhesive is adhered evenly.

  6. Remove the top release liner.

    • Important: Don’t remove the release liners on the perimeter of the enclosure.

  7. Press the end of the back glass flex cable to the connector.

  8. Insert the suction cups into the repair tray. Gently press along the edges of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Caution: Don’t press on the back of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups.

  9. Slide in the top of the upper cowling to engage the hooks.

  10. Use the black stick to lightly press the edge of the cowling, moving it about 1 mm toward the bottom of the enclosure, and engage the hooks at the bottom of the cowling. Ensure that the cowling lays flat.

  11. Use the black torque driver and the Micro stix bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-10010) into the upper cowling.

  12. Press the end of the battery flex cable to the connector.

  13. Use the ESD-safe tweezers to position the lower cowling.

  14. Use the black torque driver and the Micro stix bit to install two new trilobe screws (923-09819) into the lower cowling.

  15. Peel the first strip of the middle release liner (1) clockwise, starting at the bottom left of the enclosure. Peel the second strip (2) counterclockwise, starting at the bottom right of the enclosure. Peel the third strip (3) clockwise, starting at the top right of the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the camera assembly, TrueDepth camera grounding springs, or nearby parts.

      • Middle release liner

  16. Inspect the back glass adhesive to ensure that it’s in the correct position and not damaged or wrinkled. If the adhesive is damaged, remove it and apply replacement adhesive.

    • Warning: Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which can damage the battery and cause safety issues.

  17. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass.

  18. Remove the camera cap and tilt down the back glass to rest on the enclosure.

  19. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

  20. Press the back glass on the five areas as shown simultaneously. Then press along the edges of the back glass until it clicks into place and the back glass is flush with the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • Ensure that the flex cables aren’t trapped between the back glass and the enclosure. Feel the edges of the back glass for variations or gaps. If the back glass isn’t flush, repeat all removal steps and check the flex cables for damage. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 20 before continuing to step 21.

      • Don’t touch the camera lenses.

  21. Turn the iPhone over in the repair tray so the display is faceup.

  22. Position the repair tray with the iPhone display faceup in the display press. Pull down the lever until the display press locks.

  23. Wait until the timer on the display press beeps and the timer shows 0. Pull down the lever (1) and pull out the release knob (2). Then lift the lever (3).

  24. Remove the repair tray from the display press.

  25. Use the blue torque driver and Torx security bit to install two new security screws, one on each side of the USB-C connector. As you install the screws, press lightly on the display near the USB-C connector.

    • Caution: If the screws aren’t flush, remove and set aside the screws. Then repeat step 25 to install a new set of security screws. If the new screws still aren’t flush, repeat all removal and reassembly steps.

    • Note: Use the correct screws for the model.

      • Black (923-09817)

      • Blue, green, pink, yellow (923-09818)

  26. Clean the sides of the iPhone with a melamine sponge.

Caution

  • System Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement back glass, battery, camera, or display. TrueDepth Camera Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement TrueDepth camera. Disregard notifications about iPhone features on the Lock Screen until you complete configuration.

  • After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, initiate the required configuration. The method of initiating configuration will vary depending on the part or parts replaced.

    • If you replaced the back glass, battery, camera, or display, initiate System Configuration by putting the device into diagnostics mode. Tap Start Session and follow the onscreen prompts.

      • You’ll have one attempt to complete System Configuration. If the attempt is interrupted, canceled, or encounters an error, the device will display a message instructing you to contact the Self Service Repair Store team for assistance.

    • If you replaced the TrueDepth camera, you will need the following:

      • A Mac with the latest version of Apple Service Utility installed. You’ll also need to install iPhone Repair – TrueDepth Camera resources, located in the Apple Service Utility Resources window.

      • The device must be running the latest version of iOS.

      • Internet access

      • A USB-C charge cable
