Metal is the technology that powers hardware-accelerated graphics on Apple platforms.

Support for Metal 4

Metal 4 introduces first-class support for machine learning, and includes more advanced graphics and rendering technologies for smoother visuals and faster frame rates. These devices support Metal 4 when using the operating systems shown:

macOS Tahoe 26 or later

Support for Metal 3

Metal 3 introduces powerful new features that take gaming and pro apps to the next level. Games and apps that use Metal 3 can render high-resolution graphics in less time, minimize loading, train machine learning networks with the GPU, and more. These devices support Metal 3 when using the operating systems shown:

OS X El Capitan 10.11 or later

• MacBook Pro introduced in 2012 or later

Use System Information to check for Metal support

On Mac, you can also use System Information to check for Metal support:

1. Press and hold the Option key while choosing Apple menu  > System Information.

2. Click Graphics/Displays in the sidebar.

3. Check the information on the right for Metal Support or Metal Family:

   • If you see Metal Support, you will also see the version of Metal supported.

   • If you see Metal Family, your Mac supports Metal 2 and earlier.
