Leave Family Sharing

Learn the different ways you can leave or be removed from a family group and what happens when you stop using Family Sharing. If you're the family organizer, you can remove members at any time or disband the family group completely.

Remove yourself from a family group

Any family member age 13 or older* can remove themselves from a family group. If you have Screen Time turned on for your account, the family organizer must remove you.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Family. If you don't see Family, tap your name, then tap Family (or Family Sharing).

  2. Tap your name, then tap Stop Using Family Sharing.

On your Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings.

  2. Click Family (or Family Sharing), then click your name.

  3. Click Stop Using Family Sharing.

When you leave Family Sharing, you lose access to any shared purchases or services shared by the family group.

Remove your Apple Account from a family group online

If your Apple Account is being used to share media purchases with a family group that you no longer want to part of, you can leave the family group and remove your Apple Account from the family group altogether. To remove your account, go to account.apple.com and sign in to your Apple Account.

In the Family Sharing section:

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, sign in to account.apple.com with your Apple Account and password.

  2. On your iPhone, tap the downward-facing arrow at the top of the page, then tap Family Sharing. On your iPad or Mac, click Family Sharing on the left side of the page.

  3. Tap or click Disconnect Account.

  4. Tap or click Disconnect.

After you leave the family group, you can start your own family group or join another one.

Remove someone from your family group

The family organizer can remove anyone age 13 or older* from the family group. If you need to, you can transfer a child to another family.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Family. If you don't see Family, tap your name, then tap Family (or Family Sharing).

  2. Tap the name of the family member that you want to remove.

  3. Tap Remove [name] from Family.

On your Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click your name, then click Family (or Family Sharing).

  2. Click the name of the family member that you want to remove.

  3. Click Remove [name] from Family.

  4. Click Remove [your family member's name] to confirm.

Disband a family group

When the family organizer turns off Family Sharing, all family members are removed from the group at the same time. Before you can stop Family Sharing, you must transfer children under 13* to another family. Learn how to move a child to another Family Sharing group.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Family.

  2. Tap your name, then tap Stop Using Family Sharing.

What happens when you stop sharing?

* Age varies by country or region. Under 14 in Austria, Bulgaria, China mainland, Cyprus, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, South Korea, and Spain. Under 15 in Czechia, France, Greece, Peru, and Slovenia. Under 16 in Brazil, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, Phillipines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, and Slovakia. Under 13 in all other countries.
