Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 2.5 mm hex nut driver

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Support wedges

  • Torx T3 screwdriver

Removal

  1. Use the T3 screwdriver to remove the T3 screw (923-05558) from the fan (1).

  2. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove the 2.5 mm hex nut screw (923-05573) from the logic board (2).

  3. Position the housing with the back facedown and the top closest to you.

  4. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel off the polyester film tape on the fan flex cable.

  5. Use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the end of the fan flex cable connectors.

  6. Separate the prongs of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one prong under the fan flex cable. Carefully slide the ESD-safe tweezers toward the fan to loosen the adhesive between the fan flex cable and the logic board.

    • Caution: Don’t touch any of the small components on the logic board. Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

  7. Position the black stick under the fan flex cable. Then pull the fan flex cable out of the connector.

    • Caution: Don’t bend or twist the fan flex cable.

  8. Stand the housing upright.

  9. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to remove nine 2.5 mm hex screws from the logic board:

    • (1–5): (923-05573)

    • (6–9): (923-05556)

  10. Slightly tilt the logic board away from the housing as shown (1). Then slide the edge of the fan out from under the logic board to remove the fan from the housing (2).

    • Caution: Don’t bend the logic board as you tilt it.

Reassembly

  1. Slightly tilt the logic board forward (1). Then slide the edge of the fan under the logic board (2). Ensure that the screw holes in the fan and logic board align with the screw holes in the housing.

  2. Slide the end of the fan flex cable into the connector. Then flip down the locking lever.

  3. Press the polyester film tape over the end of the fan flex cable.

  4. Press the fan flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.

    • Important: If you’re installing a new fan, first connect the fan flex cable to the logic board. Then remove the release liners from the fan flex cable and press the flex cable to adhere it to the logic board.

  5. Use the T3 screwdriver to reinstall the T3 screw (923-05558) into the fan.

  6. Use the 2.5 mm hex nut driver to reinstall the 10 2.5 mm hex screws into the logic board:

    • (1–6): (923-05573)
