Use Apple School Manager and Profile Manager to assign Volume Store content

When you upgrade from Apple Deployment Programs, Apple School Manager uses Managed Apple IDs to assign content with Profile Manager in macOS Server. Learn how this differs from how Apple Deployment Program Facilitators (Admins) assign content in Apple Deployment Programs.

When you assign apps and books with Managed Apple IDs, your organization has more control to manage, assign, and retain Volume Store content.

After you upgrade, your organization can use different roles in Apple School Manager. These new roles enable you to assign Volume Store content with Volume Purchase Program (VPP) service tokens. These new roles include Administrator, Site Manager, and Content Manager.

If there are people at your school who have Volume Purchase accounts but aren't part of your Apple School Manager organization, learn how to invite them.

Assign apps and books

With Apple School Manager, you can assign apps and books to devices, device groups, users, and user groups. When you assign to users or user groups, they have to be in an Apple School Manager organization in Profile Manager.

Use these guidelines to help determine which method you should use to assign apps and books in your organization.
