Removal

Note

  • If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  • The back glass 1 antenna (for mmWave antenna models) must be transferred to the replacement top speaker for US models only.

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove three trilobe screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the logic board lower cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and the back glass flex cable (2) off the connectors.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove nine crosshead screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the logic board upper cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • The front camera flex cables are stacked on top of each other. Lift the end of the top flex cable off the connector.

    • Lift the ends of the bottom front camera flex cable, the back glass 1 antenna flex cable (if present) and the top speaker flex cable off the connectors.

    • Remove the front camera.

    • Remove the top speaker.

Reassembly

Screw Diagram

Important: If you are repairing a US model only, perform reassembly steps 1 through 6. For all other models skip to step 7.

  1. To remove the back glass 1 antenna (for mmWave antenna models), use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the adhesive tab on the bottom right edge of the back glass 1 antenna and begin to gently pull out the tab. Wiggle side to side and twist the adhesive around the tweezers. Then continue to pull and twist until the antenna is free. Set the antenna aside for reassembly.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to clean the adhesive off the back glass 1 antenna.

    • Caution: If the back glass 1 antenna is damaged, stop the repair and replace the iPhone.

  3. Verify that the grounding spring is in the correct position. If it isn't, use ESD-safe tweezers to reposition it.

  4. Position the replacement top speaker in the enclosure and align the top speaker gasket with the indentation.

  5. Peel the liner from the adhesive on the top speaker.

  6. Reinstall the back glass 1 antenna onto the top speaker. Press and hold the back glass 1 antenna to the top speaker for 15 seconds. Then skip to step 9.

  7. Position the replacement top speaker in the enclosure and align the top speaker gasket with the indentation.

  8. Verify that the grounding spring is in the correct position. If it isn't, use ESD-safe tweezers to reposition it.

  9. Press the ends of the top speaker flex cable and the front camera flex cables to the connectors. For mmWave antenna models, press the end of the back glass 1 antenna flex cable to the connector.

  10. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13853) (1) into the top speaker.

  11. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 13 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13868) (2) into the top speaker.

  12. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-14002) (3) into the top speaker.

  13. Use the gray torque driver and crosshead bit and install three new crosshead screws (923-13865) into the top speaker.
