iPhone 15 Pro Max Back Glass

Before You Begin

Warning

  • Improper replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions may cause malfunctions. Additionally, wireless charging may appear slow or the iPhone may not charge properly. These events could result in injury, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.

Tools

  • 6.7-inch repair tray

  • Adhesive cutter

  • Adhesive removal tool

  • Adjustable heated display pocket

  • Camera cap

  • Cut-resistant gloves

  • Display press

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

Caution

  • This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, follow the instructions to initiate System Configuration.

  • To avoid damaging the lenses, don't touch the camera assembly or nearby parts.

Important

Read Heated Display Removal Fixture if you’re setting up the fixture for the first time.

Removal

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout.

  2. Use a torque driver and the Torx security bit to remove the two security screws, one from each side of the USB-C connector. Set aside the screws.

  3. Flip the switch on the back of the heated display removal fixture to turn it on. The internal fan will turn on. Wait for a checkmark to appear on the screen.

    • Note: If an error code appears on the screen, turn off the fixture and turn it back on.

  4. Take the iPhone out of the repair tray. Then gently insert it into the adjustable heated display pocket with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the bottom of the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t scratch the iPhone as you insert it into the adjustable heated display pocket.

    • Important: Ensure that the clamp on the side of the pocket is flipped up.

  5. Position the iPhone so that it’s flush with the bottom right corner of the adjustable heated display pocket.

  6. Press on the iPhone in the three areas shown to hold it in position. Then turn the knob on the bottom right of the adjustable heated display pocket clockwise until the iPhone is secured between the brass bands.

    • Caution: Don’t overtighten the knob.

  7. Ensure that the iPhone is centered between the brass bands in the adjustable heated display pocket. If the iPhone is not centered, turn the knob counterclockwise to release the iPhone from the pocket. Then repeat steps 5 and 6.

  8. Put on the heat-resistant gloves. Align the cutout on the bottom of the pocket with the rail on the fixture. Slide the pocket with the iPhone onto the rail on the fixture.

    • Warning: Don’t insert the pocket into the fixture without wearing the heat-resistant gloves.

  9. Slide the pocket into the fixture until the pocket clicks into place.

    • Note: The screen on the fixture will turn red and the timer will count down from 2 minutes while the pocket heats to the correct temperature. When the timer shows 0, the fixture will start to beep and the screen will turn green.

  10. Turn the top knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup as close to the iPhone as possible without touching the iPhone.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the iPhone, don’t turn the knob before the timer shows 0, the fixture beeps, and the screen has turned green.

    • Note: The fixture will beep until the suction cup is lowered.

  11. Grasp the handle and slide the suction cup straight out until the edge of the suction cup aligns with the bottom edge of the back glass (1).

    • Caution: Failure to align the edges of the suction cup and back glass may damage the iPhone.

  12. Turn the knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup onto the back glass (2). Then flip down the handle on the suction cup to secure the suction cup to the back glass (3).

    • Caution: Don’t let the suction cup hang over the edge of the back glass or you may damage the iPhone. If damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

    • Important: After the suction cup is lowered onto the iPhone, the screen will begin a 15-minute countdown. When the timer shows 0, the heated display removal fixture will turn off. Ensure that you complete steps 12 and 13 within this time frame.

  13. Slowly turn the top knob on the fixture counterclockwise until the back glass begins to slightly separate from the enclosure.

    • Important: If you don’t see separation between the back glass and the enclosure right away, wait 30 seconds. If you still don’t see separation, turn the silver part of the knob counterclockwise a quarter turn until the display begins to separate from the enclosure.

    • Caution: Only turn the silver knob if you haven’t seen separation after waiting for 30 seconds.

  14. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the back glass and the enclosure. Run the cutter between the back glass and the enclosure to the right and left as shown until the glass partially releases from the enclosure.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the flex cables, don’t lift the back glass more than 5 degrees.

  15. Flip up the handle to release the suction cup. Gently slide the flat end of the black stick under the edge of the suction cup to release it from the back glass.

    • Caution: Don’t turn the knob. Turning the knob may damage the flex cables.

  16. Press the eject button on the side of the adjustable heated display pocket to release the pocket from the fixture.

  17. Hold both sides of the pocket and slide it straight out of the fixture.

  18. Turn the knob on the adjustable heated display pocket counterclockwise to release the iPhone from the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t scratch the iPhone as you remove it from the adjustable heated display pocket.

  19. Place the iPhone into the repair tray with the camera faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout. Remove the gloves.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the camera lenses.

  20. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the back glass and the enclosure as shown. Hold the adhesive cutter at a 45-degree angle. Slightly slide the back glass toward the bottom of the iPhone as you cut along the sides and top of the iPhone until the back glass is free.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the flex cables, don’t tilt up the back glass more than 5 degrees.

  21. Insert the repair tray suction cups into the slots on the right side of the repair tray. Then put on the nitrile or lint-free gloves.

    • Note: The icon on the bottom of the tray shows the direction to tilt up the back glass.

  22. Place the camera cap on the workspace next to the repair tray. Then gently tilt up the back glass from the enclosure and position the camera cap on the camera as you tilt up the back glass.

    • Caution

      • Don’t damage the flex cables as you tilt up the back glass.

      • Ensure that the hook on the back glass doesn’t catch on the enclosure as you tilt up the back glass.

  23. Press the top and bottom edges of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Warning

      • If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

      • If the back glass is broken, inspect the enclosure. If there are shards of glass in the enclosure, put on the safety glasses with side shields and cut-resistant gloves. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the shards. Then use ethanol or IPA wipes to remove any remaining shards from the adhesive on the perimeter of the enclosure. Vacuum any shards of glass from the workspace.

  24. Remove the gloves.

  25. Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove the trilobe screw from the back glass connector cowling. Set aside the screw.

  26. Use ESD-safe tweezers to tilt up the back glass connector cowling and slide it out of the enclosure. Save the cowling for reassembly.

  27. Lift the end of the back glass flex cable off the connector.

  28. Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  29. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

  30. Use ESD-safe tweezers, the black stick, or the adhesive removal tool to lift, pick, and pull the adhesive to remove it from the enclosure. Pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle. Repeat this process until all the adhesive is removed from the perimeter of the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the camera assembly, TrueDepth camera, or nearby parts.

  31. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

  32. Use ESD-safe tweezers or the black stick to pick up any remaining adhesive from the back glass. Then pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle to remove it from the back glass. Repeat this process until all adhesive is removed.

    • Caution: Don’t use the adhesive removal tool to clean the back glass.

  33. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the back glass.

Reassembly

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the USB-C connector facing the cutout. Put on the nitrile or lint-free gloves.

    • Important: If you’re installing a replacement back glass, peel the protective liner from the top and underside of it.

    • Warning: Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which can damage the battery and cause safety issues.

  2. Remove the camera cap and inspect the camera lenses to ensure that they aren't contaminated. Then replace the camera cap.

    • Important: If the camera lenses are contaminated, you must replace the camera.

  3. Align the replacement back glass adhesive with the enclosure. The replacement back glass adhesive has a top release liner, a middle release liner, and a bottom release liner. Grasp the tab on the bottom release liner. Then slowly pull the bottom release liner (1) out from under the adhesive (2) while pressing the adhesive onto the enclosure.

    • Important: Don’t remove the top release liner yet.

    • Note: The replacement back glass adhesive for your model may look different from the illustration above, but the steps are the same.

  4. Inspect the adhesive to ensure that it’s positioned on the lip of the enclosure. If the adhesive isn’t correctly positioned, repeat removal steps 29 through 32. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 4.

  5. Use the flat end of the black stick to press the back glass adhesive to the enclosure. Continue to press as you move the black stick along the edge of the enclosure at least three times.

  6. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the top release liner as shown.

    • Important: Don’t remove the middle release liners yet.

  7. Insert the suction cups into the repair tray.

  8. Align the right edge of the back glass with the right edge of the enclosure. Gently press along the edges of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Caution: Don’t press the back of the back glass to secure it to the suction cups. Pressing the back may affect functionality.

  9. Press the end of the back glass flex cable to the connector.

  10. Use ESD-safe tweezers to insert the lower end of the back glass connector cowling into the slot. Then lower the cowling over the end of the back glass flex cable.

  11. Use the black torque driver and Micro stix bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-09799) into the back glass connector cowling.

  12. Peel the first strip of the middle release liner (1) clockwise, starting at the bottom right of the enclosure. Peel the second strip (2) counterclockwise, starting near the bottom left of the enclosure. Peel the third strip (3) clockwise, starting at the top right of the enclosure.

    • Caution: The third strip of the middle release liner runs under two flex cables. Don’t damage the flex cables while removing the release liner.

  13. Inspect the back glass adhesive to ensure that it’s in the correct position and not damaged or wrinkled. If the adhesive is damaged, repeat removal steps 25 through 33. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 13 with new adhesive.

  14. Put on the nitrile or lint-free gloves. Remove the camera cap and inspect the camera lenses for contamination such as dust, scratches, or smudges. Then replace the camera cap.

    • Important: If the camera is contaminated, you must install a replacement camera after you install the replacement back glass.

  15. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Partially tilt down the back glass onto the enclosure and remove the camera cap. Then rest the back glass flat on the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • Ensure that the flex cables aren’t trapped between the back glass and the enclosure. Feel the edges of the back glass for variations or gaps. If the back glass isn’t flush, repeat all removal steps and check the flex cables for damage. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 14 before continuing to step 15.

      • Don’t touch the camera lenses.

    • Warning: If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  16. Press on the back glass in the five areas shown simultaneously until the back glass clicks into place and is flush with the enclosure.

  17. Turn over the iPhone in the repair tray so that the display is faceup.

  18. Position the repair tray with the iPhone display faceup in the display press. Pull down the lever until the display press locks.

  19. Wait until the timer on the display press beeps. Pull down the lever (1) and pull out the release knob (2). Then lift the lever (3).

  20. Remove the repair tray from the display press.

  21. Gently press down on the back glass to hold it in place. Then use the gray torque driver and Torx security bit to install two new security screws, one on each side of the USB-C connector.

    • Note: Use the correct screw color for the iPhone model.

      • Black titanium (923-09651)

      • White titanium (923-09652)

      • Natural titanium (923-09653)

      • Blue titanium (923-09654)

    • Caution: If the screws aren’t flush, remove and set aside the screws. Repeat step 21 to install another new set of screws. If the new screws still aren’t flush, repeat all removal and reassembly steps.

Caution

  • System Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement back glass, battery, camera, or display. TrueDepth Camera Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement TrueDepth camera. Disregard notifications about iPhone features on the Lock Screen until you complete configuration.

  • After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, initiate the required configuration. The method of initiating configuration will vary depending on the part or parts replaced.

    • If you replaced the back glass, battery, camera, or display, initiate System Configuration by putting the device into diagnostics mode. Tap Start Session and follow the onscreen prompts.

      • You’ll have one attempt to complete System Configuration. If the attempt is interrupted, canceled, or encounters an error, the device will display a message instructing you to contact the Self Service Repair Store team for assistance.

    • If you replaced the TrueDepth camera, you will need the following:

      • A Mac with the latest version of Apple Service Utility installed. You’ll also need to install iPhone Repair – TrueDepth Camera resources, located in the Apple Service Utility Resources window.

      • The device must be running the latest version of iOS.

      • Internet access

      • A USB-C charge cable
