Caution

  • This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, follow the instructions to initiate System Configuration.

  • To avoid damaging the lenses, don’t touch the TrueDepth camera assembly or nearby parts.

  • Don’t touch the back of the display. Touching the back of the display may affect image quality.

Important

Read Heated Display Removal Fixture if you’re setting up the fixture for the first time.

Removal

  1. Place the iPhone in the repair tray with the USB-C connector facing the cutout.

  2. Use a torque driver and the Torx security bit to remove the two security screws, one from each side of the USB-C connector. Set aside the screws.

  3. Flip the switch on the back of the heated display removal fixture to turn it on. The internal fan will turn on. Wait for a checkmark to appear on the screen.

    • Note: If an error code appears on the screen, turn off the fixture and turn it back on.

  4. Take the iPhone out of the repair tray. Then gently insert it into the adjustable heated display pocket with the display faceup and the USB-C connector facing the bottom of the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t scratch the iPhone as you insert it into the adjustable heated display pocket.

    • Important: Ensure that the clamp on the side of the pocket is flipped up.

  5. Position the iPhone so that it’s flush with the bottom right corner of the adjustable heated display pocket.

  6. Press on the iPhone in the three areas shown to hold it in position. Then turn the knob on the bottom right of the adjustable heated display pocket clockwise until the iPhone is evenly secured between the brass bands.

    • Caution: Don’t overtighten the knob.

  7. Ensure that the iPhone is centered between the brass bands on the inside of the adjustable heated display pocket. If the iPhone is not centered, turn the knob counterclockwise to release the iPhone from the pocket. Then repeat steps 5 and 6.

  8. Put on the heat-resistant gloves. Align the cutout on the bottom of the pocket with the rail on the fixture. Slide the pocket with the iPhone onto the rail on the fixture.

    • Warning: Don’t insert the pocket into the fixture without wearing the heat-resistant gloves.

  9. Slide the pocket into the fixture until the pocket clicks into place.

    • Note: The screen on the fixture will turn red and the timer will count down from 2 minutes while the pocket heats to the correct temperature. When the timer shows 0, the fixture will start to beep and the screen will turn green.

  10. Turn the knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup as close to the iPhone as possible without touching the iPhone.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the iPhone, don’t turn the knob before the timer shows 0, the fixture beeps, and the screen has turned green.

    • Note: The fixture will beep until the suction cup is lowered.

  11. Grasp the handle and slide the suction cup straight out until the edge of the suction cup aligns with the bottom edge of the display.

    • Caution: Failure to align the edges of the suction cup and the display may damage the iPhone.

  12. Turn the knob on the fixture clockwise to lower the suction cup onto the display (1). Then flip down the handle on the suction cup to secure it to the display (2).

    • Important: After the suction cup is lowered onto the iPhone, the screen will begin a 15-minute countdown. When the timer shows 0, the heated display removal fixture will turn off. Ensure that you complete steps 11 and 12 within this time frame.

  13. Slowly turn the knob on the fixture counterclockwise until the display begins to separate from the enclosure.

    • Important: If you don’t see a separation between the display and the enclosure immediately, wait 30 seconds. If you still don’t see a separation, turn the silver part of the knob counterclockwise a quarter turn until the display begins to separate from the enclosure.

    • Caution: Turn the silver knob only if you haven’t seen a gap after waiting for 30 seconds.

  14. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the display and the enclosure. Run the cutter between the display and the enclosure to the right and left as shown until the display partially releases from the enclosure.

    • Caution: To avoid damaging the flex cables, don’t tilt up the bottom of the display more than 5 degrees.

  15. Flip up the handle to release the suction cup. Gently slide the flat end of the black stick under the edge of the suction cup to release it from the display.

    • Caution: Don’t turn the knob. Turning the knob may damage the flex cables.

  16. Press the eject button on the side of the adjustable heated display pocket to release the pocket from the fixture (1). Hold both sides of the pocket and slide it straight out of the fixture (2).

  17. Turn the knob on the adjustable heated display pocket counterclockwise to release the iPhone from the pocket.

    • Caution: Don’t scratch the iPhone as you remove it from the adjustable heated display pocket.

  18. Place the iPhone into the repair tray with the display faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout. Remove the gloves.

  19. Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the display and the enclosure as shown. Hold the adhesive cutter at a 45-degree angle. Cut along the top and sides of the iPhone until the display is free.

    • Caution: Stop cutting at the antenna bands as shown.

  20. Display clips at the top of the enclosure hold the display in place. Grasp both sides of the iPhone. Use gentle, steady force to pull the display downward until a small gap appears and the display clips release. Then insert the adhesive cutter into the gap. Cut the adhesive at the top of the enclosure as you continue to gently pull the display.

  21. Insert the repair tray suction cups into the slots on the left side of the repair tray.

    • Caution

      • To avoid damaging the enclosure or display, ensure that the internal display clips are released before you tilt up the display.

      • Don’t damage the flex cables as you tilt up the display.

  22. Ensure that there is still a gap at the top of the iPhone between the display and the enclosure. Then tilt up the display toward the suction cups. Press the top and bottom edges of the display to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Note: The icon on the bottom of the repair tray shows the correct direction to tilt up the display.

    • Caution: Don’t press on the back of the display as you secure it to the suction cups.

    • Warning: If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  23. Use a torque driver and Micro stix bit to remove the six trilobe screws from the logic board cowling. Set aside the screws.

  24. Use ESD-safe tweezers to tilt up the logic board cowling as shown.

  25. Use ESD-safe tweezers to slide the logic board cowling out from under the ambient light sensor flex cable. Then lift the cowling out of the enclosure. Save the cowling for reassembly.

  26. Use the black stick to lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector (1).

    • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

  27. Use the black stick to lift the ends of the display flex cable (2) and ambient light sensor flex cable (3) off the connectors.

  28. Hold the display by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the display. Then set the display facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  29. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

  30. Use the adhesive removal tool or ESD-safe tweezers to pick up the adhesive on the edge of the enclosure. Then pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle to remove it. Repeat this process until all adhesive is removed.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the TrueDepth camera, grounding springs, or top speaker grille foams as you remove the adhesive.

  31. Use ESD-safe tweezers to pick up the adhesive on the edges of the display. Then pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle to remove it from the edges of the display. Repeat this process until all adhesive is removed.

    • Caution: Don’t use the adhesive removal tool to clean the display.

  32. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the display and enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t touch any other part of the display glass with the ethanol or IPA wipes. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol may damage the display and affect image quality.

Reassembly

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the USB-C cable facing the cutout.

  2. Inspect the internal display clips to ensure that they are at a 90-degree angle and aren’t bent or damaged.

    • Important

      • If the internal display clips are damaged, you may need to replace the display.

      • If you’re installing a replacement display, peel the protective liner from the top and underside of it.

    • Warning: Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which can damage the battery and cause safety issues.

  3. Ensure that no residual adhesive is blocking the speaker hole or the microphone hole in the top of the enclosure.

  4. Inspect the top speaker grille and the two pieces of speaker foam. If any of these are damaged or missing, continue to step 5 to replace the top speaker grille. Otherwise, skip to step 9.

  5. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the existing top speaker grille from the channel in the enclosure.

  6. Remove the adhesive backing from the replacement top speaker grille.

  7. Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the replacement top speaker grille in the channel in the enclosure.

  8. Use the black stick to tap the grille into place.

  9. Align the display adhesive over the enclosure.

    • Caution: Ensure that you’ve removed all residual adhesive from the display and the enclosure before you apply the replacement display adhesive.

  10. The replacement display adhesive has a top release liner, a middle release liner, and a flexible bottom release liner. Grasp the tab on the bottom release liner. Then slowly pull the bottom release liner (1) out from under the adhesive (2) while pressing the adhesive onto the enclosure.

    • Important: Don’t remove the top release liner yet.

      • Bottom release liner (1)

      • Adhesive (2)

    • Note: The replacement display adhesive for your model may look different from the illustration above, but the steps are the same.

  11. Inspect the adhesive to ensure that it’s positioned on the shelf of the enclosure. If the adhesive isn’t correctly positioned, repeat removal steps 30 through 32. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 11.

  12. Use the flat end of the black stick to adhere the display adhesive by pressing and moving the black stick evenly over the adhesive to adhere it to the edges of the enclosure. Then repeat this process at least two more times.

    • Caution: Only press on the display adhesive in the areas shown. Don’t press on the top speaker grille or the foams.

  13. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the top release liner.

    • Important: Don’t remove the middle release liner yet.

  14. Insert the suction cups into the repair tray.

  15. Align the left edge of the display with the left edge of the enclosure. Gently press along the edges of the display to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Caution: Don’t press the back of the display.

  16. Press the ends of the display flex cable (1) and ambient light sensor flex cable (2) to the connectors. Press evenly along the length of each connector.

  17. Press the end of the battery flex cable (3) to the connector. Press evenly along the length of the connector.

  18. Use ESD-safe tweezers to tilt down the logic board cowling (1) into the enclosure.

    Then slide the top edge of the cowling behind the ambient light sensor flex cable (2) and under the clip located on the upper left side of the logic board. Lower the cowling over the ends of the flex cables.

  19. Use the gray torque driver and Micro stix bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-10045) (1) into the logic board.

  20. Use the green torque driver and Micro stix bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-09566) (2) into the logic board.

  21. Use the green torque driver and Micro stix bit to install four new trilobe screws (923-09811) (3) into the logic board.

  22. Peel the first strip of the middle release liner (1) clockwise, starting at the bottom right of the enclosure. Peel the second strip (2) counterclockwise, starting at the bottom right of the enclosure. Peel the third strip (3) clockwise, starting at the bottom left of the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • The third strip of the middle release liner runs under two flex cables. Don't damage the flex cables while removing the release liner.

      • Don’t touch the TrueDepth cameras or nearby parts.

  23. Inspect the display adhesive to ensure it’s in the correct position and isn't damaged or wrinkled. If the adhesive is damaged, remove it and apply replacement adhesive.

    • Warning

      • Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which can damage the battery and cause safety issues.

      • If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  24. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the display. Tilt down the top of the display into the top of the enclosure to engage the display clips. Then rest the display on the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t bend or damage the display clips. If the clips are bent or damaged, the display must be replaced.

  25. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

  26. Press all four corners of the display simultaneously. Then press along the edges of the display until the display clicks into place and is flush with the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • Ensure that the flex cables aren't trapped between the display and the enclosure.

      • Feel the edges of the display for variations or gaps. If the display isn’t flush, repeat all removal steps and check the flex cables for damage. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 26.

  27. Position the repair tray with the iPhone in the display press. Pull down the lever until the display press locks.

  28. Wait until the display press beeps and the timer shows 0. Pull down the lever (1) and pull out the release knob (2). Then lift the lever (3).

  29. Remove the repair tray from the display press.

  30. Gently press down on the display to hold it in place. Then use the gray torque driver and Torx security bit to install two new security screws, one on each side of the USB-C connector.

    • Note: Use the correct screw color for the iPhone model.

      • Black titanium (923-09651)

      • White titanium (923-09652)

      • Natural titanium (923-09653)

      • Blue titanium (923-09654)

    • Caution: If the screws aren’t flush, remove and set aside the screws. Repeat step 30 to install a new set of screws. If the new screws still aren’t flush, repeat all removal and reassembly steps.

Caution

  • System Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement back glass, battery, camera, or display. TrueDepth Camera Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement TrueDepth camera. Disregard notifications about iPhone features on the Lock Screen until you complete configuration.

  • After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, initiate the required configuration. The method of initiating configuration will vary depending on the part or parts replaced.

    • If you replaced the back glass, battery, camera, or display, initiate System Configuration by putting the device into diagnostics mode. Tap Start Session and follow the onscreen prompts.

      • You’ll have one attempt to complete System Configuration. If the attempt is interrupted, canceled, or encounters an error, the device will display a message instructing you to contact the Self Service Repair Store team for assistance.

    • If you replaced the TrueDepth camera, you will need the following:

      • A Mac with the latest version of Apple Service Utility installed. You’ll also need to install iPhone Repair – TrueDepth Camera resources, located in the Apple Service Utility Resources window.

      • The device must be running the latest version of iOS.

      • Internet access

      • A USB-C charge cable

      • After you’ve installed Apple Service Utility on a Mac, learn how to initiate the TrueDepth Camera Configuration process at support.apple.com/self-service-repair.
