Find your AirPods firmware version
You can use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to find your AirPods firmware version.
Find your AirPods firmware version on your iPhone or iPad
To use your iPhone or iPad to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the next to the name of your AirPods. Scroll down to the About section to find the firmware version.
Find your AirPods firmware version on your Mac
To use your Mac to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of macOS. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Bluetooth, then click the next to the name of your AirPods.
If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware.
Update your AirPods firmware
Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. You can also use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to check that your AirPods have the latest version.
If your AirPods don’t have the latest firmware version, you can update your firmware.
Update your AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware
Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, and that Bluetooth is on.
Make sure that your AirPods are connected via Bluetooth to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.
Connect your charging case to power.
Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid. Keep the lid of the charging case closed, and keep your AirPods in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Check the firmware version again.
If you still can’t update your firmware, reset your AirPods, then try to update your firmware again.
Update your AirPods Max firmware
Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, and that Bluetooth is on.
Make sure that your AirPods Max are connected via Bluetooth to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.
Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
Keep your AirPods Max in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
Reconnect your AirPods Max to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Check the firmware version again.
If you still can’t update your firmware, reset your AirPods Max, then try to update your firmware again.

Version 8A356 release notes
Firmware update 8A356 adds features and capabilities to support the new AirPods Pro 3, including heart rate sensing during workouts in the Fitness app on iPhone with iOS 26 where users can monitor their heart rate, calories burned, steps, and distance for up to 50 different workout types.
Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence–enabled iPhone running iOS 26 and later. Available in beta with support for these languages: English (UK, US), French (France), German (Germany), Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). Later this year, Live Translation on AirPods will add language support for Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Italian. Some features may not be available in all regions or languages. Live Translation with AirPods is not available for EU residents whose device is in the EU and whose Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU. Apple Intelligence users based in other regions can continue to use Live Translation with AirPods anywhere they travel.
When used with an iOS 26 or iPadOS 26-supported iPhone or iPad, firmware update 8A356 also enhances the experience for Hearing Aid users. A user’s own voice and people they're speaking to now sound even more natural and with automatic Conversation Boost, voices of people in front of the user will dynamically be amplified while background noise is reduced to improve speech intelligibility in louder environments like restaurants or the office. When used with an iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26-supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac, firmware update 8A356 also adds new ways to capture content and levels up the communication experience for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. Studio quality audio recording improves vocal texture and clarity when utilizing AirPods with the Camera app, Voice Memos, and dictation in Messages. Voice quality on calls, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled apps will also sound more natural. While using the Camera app or compatible third-party camera apps on iPhone or iPad, capturing photos or videos at a distance is easier than ever with a simple press-and-hold from the stem with AirPods camera remote. In addition, this update includes improvements for charging reminders, Automatic Switching that now includes CarPlay and helps pause media on inactivity for users who utilize AirPods to wind down for sleep.
