Use Markup on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

With Markup, you can draw or add text on screenshots and photos, select different opacity and font thickness, and even add a signature to a PDF document.

Apps and features that use Markup

Here are some apps you can use with Markup and steps to get started:

Mail

  1. Open Mail and tap the compose buttonnull to start a new email. Or reply to an existing email.

  2. Tap inside the body of your email to open the format bar, then tap the Attachment buttonnull.

  3. Tap your Photo Library, the Camera buttonNo alt supplied for Image or the Document buttonNo alt supplied for Image, then look for the photo or PDF you want to attach and mark up.

  4. Tap the attachment, then tap the grey arrow iconnull. Tap the Markup buttonNo alt supplied for Image to add your markup. Tap the plus buttonnull to add a signature, text and more.

    In iOS 26, you can use Markup to add text, shapes or even a signature to documents and images.

  5. Tap the More buttonnull, tap Done, then send your email.

Messages

  1. Open Messages and tap the compose buttonnull to start a new conversation. Or go to an existing conversation.

  2. Tap the Plus buttonnull , then tap Photos.

  3. Select a photo.

  4. Tap the photo in the message, then tap Markup. From here, you can add a sketch to the photo, or tap the plus buttonnull for other Markup options.

    In Messages, tap a photo you want to add to your conversation to reveal the Markup button.

  5. Tap Save, then tap the Done buttonnull.

  6. Tap the Send buttonNo alt supplied for Image.

Photos

  1. Go to Photos and select the photo you want.

  2. Tap the Edit buttonnull.

  3. Tap the Markup buttonNo alt supplied for Image. Tap the Add buttonnull to add text, shapes and more.

  4. Tap the Done buttonnull, then tap Done again.

Draw with Markup

After you've chosen a Markup tool – such as the pen, highlighter or pencil – select a colour and start drawing. Tap the same tool again to change the colour opacity, or tap another tool to change the thickness. You can also tap the Colour buttonNo alt supplied for Image to change colour shades.

With Markup, you can use your finger to draw directly onto an image.

Move a drawing

After you’ve drawn something, you can move it around. Tap the Lasso buttonNo alt supplied for Image, trace a circle around the drawing that you want to move, then drag it where you want it.

Erase or undo a drawing

To redo a drawing, tap the eraser buttonNo alt supplied for Image and rub your finger across the area you want to erase. You can also undo any markup action by using the Undo buttonnull. If you undo a markup accidentally, you can shake your device and tap Redo.

Add text, a signature and shapes

Tap the Add buttonnull to choose from other Markup tools:

Tap the circle to choose a different text colour, then tap the formatting buttonnull to adjust the font, size and alignment.

Add or create a signature for a document quickly.

The loupe button in Markup

Drag the loupe around, use the blue dot to adjust the size and the green dot to increase or decrease the magnification level.

The shape button in Markup

Tap a shape to add it to your screenshot, photo or PDF. Drag the shape to where you want it and use the blue dots to adjust the size and shape. Use the green dots to adjust the arrow's curve and the speech bubble's appearance.
