Update Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro or another Pro App on your Mac
To update a Pro App, you should back up your existing app, turn off Automatic Updates, then update the app.
Back up a Pro App
In the Applications folder, Control-click the Pro App you want to back up, then choose Get Info. Note the version number that appears in the Get Info window.
Create a new folder in the Applications folder and name the folder with the name and version of the Pro App (for example, “Final Cut Pro 11”).
Select the Pro App in the Applications folder, then choose File > Compress [Pro App name]. It will take a few minutes to compress the app.
Move the resulting ZIP file into the folder you created.
To create a back up of the ZIP file, copy the file to an external storage device.
Turn off Automatic Updates
Turn off automatic updates for Pro Apps and macOS so you can check third-party software and hardware compatibility before you update.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar.
Click Software Update on the right.
Click the Info button next to Automatic Updates, turn off “Install macOS updates” and “Install application updates from the App Store”, then click Done.
When you turn off automatic updates, you’ll have to manually update a Pro App and any other apps you’ve downloaded from the Mac App Store. You’ll also have to manually update macOS.
Update a Pro App manually
If you’re using third-party software (such as plug-ins) or external hardware (such as an audio interface) with your Pro App, check with the manufacturer to make sure the product is compatible with the latest version of the Pro App.
Make sure you’ve signed in to your Mac with the Apple Account used to purchase the app.
Open the App Store.
In the sidebar, click Updates.
Click Update next to the Pro App or click Update All to update all apps that have available updates.
If you can’t update a Pro App
If you can see a price button next to the app instead of Update or Open in the App Store, you’ve signed in to the wrong Apple Account on your Mac. Sign in to the Apple Account that was used to purchase the app. If you have multiple Apple Accounts, you can migrate purchases to a single Apple Account to consolidate purchases, sign in to that Apple Account, then update the app.
Your version of macOS may not be compatible with the latest version of the app. Update to the latest macOS. In some cases your Mac may not be compatible with the latest macOS or version of the Pro App you want to update.
If you purchased Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro preinstalled when you bought your Mac, you have to “adopt” the app to make sure you get updates, the ability to install the app on other personal devices and other features of ownership. Find out how to adopt your preinstalled Pro App.
If you still can’t update a Pro App or if you’re having an issue after an update, you can reinstall the backup copy of the Pro App to continue working on your projects.
If you can’t see an update for an app that you own in the Updates section of the Mac App Store and you’ve signed in to the right Apple Account on your Mac, press Command-R to refresh the list.
Reinstall a backup copy of a Pro App
You can reinstall the backup copy of a Pro App if updating has interrupted your workflow.
Drag the currently installed version of the Pro App from the Applications folder to the Bin, then empty the Bin.
Locate the backup copy of the Pro App, then double-click the ZIP file to uncompress it.
If necessary, drag the unzipped Pro App file to the Applications folder.
To create a back up of the ZIP file, copy the file to an external storage device.
