Change your default contactless app in the European Economic Area

In the European Economic Area, you can change the default contactless app on your iPhone.

Features in this article are only available to iOS users in countries or regions of the European Economic Area.

If you live in the European Economic Area, you can choose any eligible app on your iPhone to be your default contactless app. This will allow you to launch the default contactless app by double-clicking the side button or holding your iPhone near a compatible NFC reader to make contactless transactions. You can go to Settings to manage your default contactless app preferences.

The European Economic Area includes all countries in the European Union, as well as Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway.

To get started

You must have iOS 17.4 or later and the latest version of the contactless app installed that you want to set as your default. You won't see the option to update your preferences unless you have an eligible contactless app installed on your iPhone.

  1. Go to the app that you want to use as your default contactless app.

  2. Accept the onscreen prompt that will give the app permission to access your iPhone's NFC technology.

Change your default contactless app

  1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Settings > (App Name) > App Settings Page > Default Contactless app.

  3. Choose the app that you want to set as your default contactless app.

  4. For your default contactless app selection to go into effect, you’ll need to accept the onscreen prompt.

Only one eligible app can make contactless transactions using NFC at a time.

You can still make payments with an app that isn't set as your default contactless app. Follow the steps provided by your app developer to determine how to use the app to make contactless transactions. If you can’t see an app available to set as your default app, contact the app developer.

If you change your default contactless app from the Wallet app to another eligible contactless app, certain Apple Pay & Wallet features will be affected.
