How to AirPlay audio

Stream music, podcasts, and other audio to an Apple TV, HomePod, or AirPlay 2-compatible speaker or smart TV. Play audio across multiple speakers throughout your home in perfect sync. Or play something different in every room — all with AirPlay.

 

AirPlay audio from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Play music on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, then control where it's playing from Control Center:

  1. Open Control Center:
    • On iPhone X or later or iPad with iOS 12 or later: Swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
    • On iPhone 8 or earlier or iOS 11 or earlier: Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.
  2. Press and hold the audio card in the upper-right corner, then tap .
  3. Tap each speaker or TV that you want to play the current audio to. 

You can also AirPlay audio from an app you're using on your iOS device. Just open the app, tap , then tap a speaker or tap multiple speakers.

AirPlay audio from your Apple TV

Whether you're watching a movie or listening to music on your Apple TV, you can use AirPlay to stream audio to one or more HomePod or AirPlay 2-compatible speaker or smart TV.

AirPlay from Apple TV to HomePod is currently in beta.

Stream audio from a video you’re watching

  1. While you're watching a movie on your Apple TV, swipe down from the top of your Apple TV Remote.
  2. Select Audio.
  3. Select each speaker or TV that you want to play the current audio to.

Stream music that you're listening to

  1. While you're listening to music on your Apple TV, swipe down from the top of your Apple TV Remote.
  2. Select .
  3. Select each speaker or TV that you want to play the current audio to.

You can also press and hold  on your Apple TV Remote and select a speaker.

AirPlay audio from iTunes on a Mac or PC

Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes on your Mac or PC and that your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi or ethernet network. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. To the right of the volume slider in iTunes, click .
  3. Click each speaker or TV that you want to play the current audio to.

AirPlay audio from your Mac

To stream audio from your Mac to your Apple TV, HomePod, or AirPlay-compatible speaker:

  1. Make sure that your Mac and speaker are on the same Wi-Fi or ethernet network.
  2. Go to Apple () menu > System Preferences > Sound.
  3. Under Output, select a speaker that you want to stream audio to. If you select Show volume in menu bar, then you can quickly change the audio output by clicking  in the menu bar.

You can't AirPlay to multiple speakers from the menu bar on a Mac.
