Removal

  1. Use a torque driver and the fixed driver JCIS bit to remove the three crosshead screws from the Taptic Engine connector cowling. Set aside the screws. Remove the Taptic Engine connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove the trilobe screw from the charge port assembly flex cable. Set aside the screw.

  3. There are two flex cable connectors on top of the main microphone. Lift the end of the top charge port assembly flex cable off the connector (top right) and lift the ends of the Taptic Engine flex cable (bottom left) and the main microphone flex cable (bottom right) off the connectors.

    1. Note the alignment of the two flex cables on the main microphone for reassembly.

    2. Lift the charge port assembly flex cable to the left to access a crosshead screw. Caution: There is adhesive under the charge port assembly flex cable.

  4. Use a torque driver and the fixed driver JCIS bit to remove one crosshead screw from the Taptic Engine. Set aside the screw.

  5. Lift the Taptic Engine to separate it from the battery shim and then use the black stick to lift the Taptic Engine flex cable from the adhesive on the main microphone to remove it.

Reassembly

Note: A new Taptic Engine comes with adhesive already installed. If you're reinstalling the existing Taptic Engine, you must adhere new adhesive to the Taptic Engine (923-11950) and to the Taptic Engine flex cable (923-11951).

  1. Position the Taptic Engine in the enclosure and remove the adhesive liner.

  2. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 13 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and the adjustable torque driver JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-11132) into the Taptic Engine.

  3. Note the positions of the flex cable connectors.

    1. Remove the adhesive liners. Adhere the Taptic Engine connector (1) to the main microphone slightly higher than the main microphone connector (2).

    2. Position the ends of the Taptic Engine flex cable and main microphone flex cable over the connectors. Press the ends of the flex cables to the connectors.

      • Ensure that the Taptic Engine flex cable and the charge port assembly flex cable are aligned correctly. The Taptic Engine flex cable should sit slightly higher.

    3. Position the top charge port assembly flex cable over the connector and press the end of the flex cable to the connector on the logic board.

  4. Press on the Taptic Engine for 15 seconds to adhere the adhesive.

  5. Use the black torque driver and the Micro stix bit to install a new trilobe screw (923-11124) into the charge port assembly flex cable.

  6. Position the Taptic Engine connector cowling over the Taptic Engine.

  7. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and the adjustable torque driver JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-11133) (1) into the Taptic Engine connector cowling.

  8. Use the orange torque driver and the fixed driver JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-11128) (2) and (923-11131) (3) into the Taptic Engine connector cowling.
