MacBook Pro (14-inch, M4 Pro or M4 Max, 2024) Logic Board

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • #00 Phillips screwdriver

    • Note: Required only if installing a replacement logic board.

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Kapton tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

  • Torx T6 security bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

Important: This procedure requires screw covers (923-07049), which are included with a replacement part, but can also be ordered separately.

Note: Your logic board and heat sink may look different, but the procedure is the same.

Removal

  1. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the 17 3IP screws from the following eight cowlings:

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (1)

    • Three 3IP screws (923-06854) from the left USB-C boards connector cowling (2)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the audio board connector cowling (3)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the right USB-C board connector cowling (4)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-10093) from the Touch ID board connector cowling (5)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-06854) from the display connector cowlings (6, 7)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the lid angle sensor connector cowling (8)

  2. Remove the eight cowlings (1–8) and save them for reassembly.

  3. Use the black stick to lift the ends of the following 10 flex cables off the connectors on the logic board:

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (1)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (2, 3)

    • Audio board flex cable (4)

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (5)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (6)

    • Display backlight power flex cable (7)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (8)

    • Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) flex cable (9)

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (10)

  4. Gently peel the Touch ID board flex cable from the logic board.

  5. Lift the display flex cable clips off the internal frame of the top case. Gently fold them back over the edge of the top case to reveal the display flex cable bumpers underneath.

  6. Lift the display flex cable bumpers out of the top case. Save them for reassembly.

  7. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel back the polyester film tabs on the ends of the following seven flex cables:

    • Microphone flex cable (1)

    • Left speaker flex cable (2)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard flex cable (4)

    • Right speaker flex cable (5)

    • Right fan flex cable (6)

    • Left fan flex cable (7)

  8. Use the black stick to flip up the locking levers on the seven flex cable connectors (1–7).

  9. Spread the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the left fan flex cable. Gently slide the tweezer tip under the flex cable to loosen the adhesive between the flex cable and logic board. Repeat this step to loosen the adhesive on the right fan flex cable.

    • Caution:

      • Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

      • Don't touch any of the small components on the logic board or fan flex cables.

  10. Slide the ends of the following seven flex cables out of the connectors:

    • Microphone flex cable (1)

    • Left speaker flex cable (2)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard flex cable (4)

    • Right speaker flex cable (5)

    • Right fan flex cable (6)

    • Left fan flex cable (7)

  11. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel off the four screw covers from the screws in the middle of the logic board.

    • Important: Don't reuse the screw covers. New screw covers (923-07049) are included with replacement parts, but can also be ordered separately.

  12. Use the black stick to clean all adhesive residue from the logic board.

  13. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and the 5IP bit to remove six 5IP screws from the logic board:

    • Two 5IP screws (923-11150) (1)

    • Four 5IP screws (923-07039) (2)

  14. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and the 5IP bit to remove the following five 5IP screws from the logic board in the order shown:

    • One 5IP screw (923-11150) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07037) (2)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-11151) (3)

  15. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to remove the following three 6IP screws from the logic board:

    • Two 6IP screws (923-10091) (1)

    • One 6IP screw (923-10090) (2)

  16. Peel back the fan duct covers from the fans (1). Then gently fold back the fan duct covers and flex cables. Use Kapton tape to hold them back as shown.

    • Caution:

      • Don’t strain the flex cables. Loosely tape them back so you can easily lift the logic board.

      • Don’t tape back the trackpad and BMU flex cables.

  17. Use the black stick to slightly lift the edge of the logic board as shown.

  18. Gently tilt up the logic board as shown (1). Then slide the logic board out of the top case (2). Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (3) as you remove the logic board.

    • Caution: Don't damage the Touch ID board flex cable as you remove the logic board.

    • Caution: Don't remove the heat sink from the logic board.

Reassembly

Caution: If you're installing a replacement logic board, don't discard the packaging and stiffeners. The packaging and stiffeners must be transferred to the existing logic board before returning to Apple Service to prevent damage during shipping.

Important

  • If you're reinstalling the existing logic board, skip to reassembly step 11.

  • If you're installing a replacement logic board, complete all reassembly steps.

  1. Follow the removal and reassembly steps to install a replacement Touch ID board.

  2. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully loosen the six captive #00 Phillips screws from the top stiffeners on the replacement logic board. Note: The four stiffeners are marked with the following:

    • TL (top left)

    • TR (top right)

    • BL (bottom left)

    • BR (bottom right)

  3. Lift the top stiffeners off the replacement logic board and set them aside.

  4. Lift the replacement logic board off the bottom stiffeners and set it aside.

  5. Position the bottom stiffeners on the existing logic board as shown. Align the screw holes in the bottom stiffeners with the screw holes in the existing logic board. Hold the bottom stiffeners in place and turn over the logic board.

  6. Position the top stiffeners on the existing logic board. Align the screw holes in the top stiffeners with the screw holes in the existing logic board.

    • Important: The captive screws in the top stiffeners install through the screw holes of the logic board and into the screw holes in the bottom stiffeners.

  7. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully reinstall the six captive #00 Phillips screws into the four stiffeners.

  8. Place the existing logic board inside the reused ESD-safe packaging.

  9. Position the packaged logic board in the foam frame.

  10. Close and seal the box. Ship the box to Apple Service.

  11. Ensure that the fan duct covers and flex cables are folded back and secured to the top case with Kapton tape.

  12. Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (1). Hold the logic board by the edges. Tilt down the edge of the logic board to position it in the top case (2). Then lower the logic board into the top case (3).

    • Caution: Don’t damage the Touch ID board flex cable as you position the logic board.

  13. Gently remove the Kapton tape from the fan duct covers and flex cables. Position the fan duct covers and press to adhere them to the heat sink.

  14. Set the torque value on the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.4 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to reinstall the three 6IP screws in the order shown:

    • Two 6IP screws (923-10091) (1)

    • One 6IP screw (923-10090) (2)

  15. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 20.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the following five 5IP screws:

    • One 5IP screw (923-11150) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07037) (2)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-11151) (3)

  16. Ensure that the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver is set to 20.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall two 5IP screws (923-11150).

  17. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 28 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall four 5IP screws (923-07039).

  18. Peel the new screw covers (923-07049) from the adhesive backing. Position the screw covers over each of the four screws.

  19. Press the screw covers to adhere them to the screws.

  20. Tuck only the folded section of the display flex cables (length of the flex cable closest to the display) into the gap between the display and internal frame.

  21. Position the display cable bumpers in the internal frame and over the bends in the display flex cables as shown.

  22. Align the display flex cable clips around the edge of the display cable bumpers (1). Then insert the display flex cables into the gap between the internal frame and logic board (2).

  23. Press the display flex cable clips down over the bumpers and onto the internal frame.

  24. Slide the ends of the following seven flex cables into the connectors:

    • Microphone flex cable (1)

    • Left speaker flex cable (2)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard flex cable (4)

    • Right speaker flex cable (5)

    • Right fan flex cable (6)

    • Left fan flex cable (7)

  25. Use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the locking levers. Then press the polyester film tabs to the ends of the seven flex cables (1–7).

  26. Press and hold the left fan flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board. Then repeat this step to adhere the right fan flex cable.

  27. Press the ends of the following 10 flex cables to the connectors on the logic board:

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (1)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (2, 3)

    • Audio board flex cable (4)

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (5)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (6)

    • Display backlight power flex cable (7)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (8)

    • eDP flex cable (9)

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (10)

  28. Position the following eight cowlings over the connectors on the logic board:

    • MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (1)

    • Left USB-C boards connector cowling (2)

    • Audio board connector cowling (3)

    • Right USB-C board connector cowling (4)

    • Touch ID board connector cowling (5)

    • Display connector cowling (6)

    • Display connector cowling (7)

    • Lid angle sensor connector cowling (8)

  29. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall 17 3IP screws into the eight cowlings (1–8):

    • 15 3IP screws (923-06854) (1–4, 6–8)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-10093) (5)

  30. Press and hold the Touch ID board flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board.
