Report and reduce spam in iCloud Mail

iCloud Mail blocks most junk mail, or spam, from your inbox. Here's how to delete and report unwanted mail.

Report junk mail

To make sure that the Mail app marks future messages from the same sender as junk, you can report messages as junk. When you mark an email as junk, you help improve iCloud Mail filtering and reduce future spam.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. In the Mail app, swipe left on the message.

  2. Tap More, then tap Move to Junk.

On your Mac

  1. In Mail, select the message.

  2. Click the Junk button in the Mail toolbar. Or drag the message to the Junk folder in the sidebar.

On iCloud.com

  1. In Mail, select the message.

  2. Click More, then choose Move Message to Junk. Or drag the message to the Junk folder in the sidebar.

Mark legitimate emails as not junk

Filtering out junk mail can block a legitimate email from reaching your inbox. If a legitimate email message is accidentally filtered, you can mark it as not junk so that any future messages from the same sender go to your inbox:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, open the message in the Junk folder, tap the Move to Folder buttonNo alt supplied for Image, then tap Inbox to move the message.

  • On your Mac, select the message in the Junk folder and click the Junk button in the Mail toolbar. Or just drag the message to the Inbox in the sidebar.

  • On iCloud.com, click the Junk folder in the sidebar. Select the message, then click Not Junk at the top of the message window. Or just drag the message to the Inbox in the sidebar.

  • For other mail clients, move the message from the Junk folder to the inbox.

If you notice that multiple email messages are delayed, bounced, or not delivered, contact iCloud Support. Email messages in the Junk folder automatically delete after 30 days.

Reduce future spam

To help reduce the amount of spam you receive, don't open suspected junk mail, turn on Protect Mail Activity, and use an email alias.

Adjust your Mail Privacy Protection settings

Spammers use the email image-loading feature to determine whether your email account is active. To keep images from loading automatically:

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings, then tap Apps.

  2. Tap Mail, then select Privacy Protection.

  3. Turn on Protect Mail Activity.

On Mac

  1. In Mail, click Mail, then choose Settings (or Preferences in MacOS Monterey or earlier).

  2. Select Privacy, then turn on Protect Mail Activity.

On iCloud.com

  1. Go to iCloud.com/mail, then click the Settings buttonNo alt supplied for Image.

  2. Choose Privacy & Security, then turn on Protect Mail Activity.

Use an iCloud email alias or Hide My Email with iCloud+

You can use an iCloud email alias to prevent junk mail from reaching your primary iCloud email address. With an iCloud+ subscription, Hide My Email lets you generate random, unique addresses to share with websites or apps and keep your personal address private.
