Shutdown and startup order for Xsan network devices
Learn how to shut down and start up your Xsan network devices in the right order to avoid potential data loss.
If you don’t shut down and start up your Xsan network devices correctly, some logical drives might become unavailable. Follow these steps to safely shut down and start up your Xsan network.
Shut down Xsan devices
Make sure that you follow these steps in order. After each step, make sure that the system or device has shut down completely before you proceed.
Shut down Xsan clients.
Use Server app on the Xsan metadata controller (MDC) to stop all Xsan volumes.
Shut down Xsan MDC systems.
Shut down all storage devices.
If you use a Promise VTrak RAID with JBOD expansion units, always power off the RAID subsystem first. Then power off the JBOD expansion units.
Shut down all Fibre Channel Switches and Gigabit Ethernet Switches.
Start up Xsan devices
Make sure that you follow these steps in order. After each step, make sure that the system or device has started up completely before you proceed. RAID devices and associated switches take longer to start up than MDC systems.
Start up all Fibre Channel Switches and Gigabit Ethernet Switches.
Start up all storage devices.
If you use a Promise VTrak RAID with JBOD expansion units, always power on the JBOD expansion units first. Then power on the RAID subsystem. If you don’t follow this order, logical drives might become unavailable. Also, physical drives in the JBOD expansion units might be reported as Dead or Offline. If you have either of these issues, contact Promise support for help.
Start up the Xsan MDC systems.
If necessary, use Server app to start all Xsan volumes.
Start up all Xsan clients.
