Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Remove the following parts before continuing to step 1:

  1. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove one trilobe screw from the logic board connector cowling. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of seven flex cables (1–7) off their connectors.

      • Important: Flex cable (3) covers (4), and flex cable (5) covers (6).

    • Gently move the flex cables out of the way as you slightly lift the logic board.

    • Caution: Identify whether you're repairing a model with an mmWave antenna (left) or without one (right).

      • If you're repairing an mmWave model (left), follow steps 2 through 4 to complete removal.

      • If you're repairing a non-mmWave model (right), skip to step 5. Then follow the remaining steps to complete removal.

  2. mmWave only: Place the repair tray onto the logic board dock as shown. Align the two holes in the repair tray with the two pins on the dock.

  3. mmWave only: Place the logic board dock insert (mmWave) into the logic board dock. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Slowly tilt the logic board away from the enclosure, moving flex cables out of the way as necessary. Align the two screw holes in the logic board with the two pins on the dock insert.

    • Flip the lock mechanism closed to secure the logic board to the dock insert.

    • Caution: Don’t pinch or stretch the flex cables on the back of the logic board. Avoid touching components on the logic board.

  4. mmWave only: Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove the two trilobe screws, one from the back glass connector cowling and one from the mmWave connector cowling. Then complete the entire step.

    • Remove the two cowlings and save them for reassembly.

      • Caution: The mmWave connector cowling (top) has a hook. Avoid contact with the flex cables.

    • Lift the ends of the back glass flex cable and mmWave flex cable off the connectors on the logic board.

    • Lift the dock insert with the logic board out of the dock.

    • Press the release arm (1) to flip open the lock mechanism (2) and lift the logic board off the dock insert (3). Place the logic board on a clean, flat surface.

  5. Non-mmWave only: Place the repair tray onto the logic board dock as shown. Align the two holes in the repair tray with the two pins on the dock.

  6. Non-mmWave only: Place the logic board dock insert (non-mmWave) into the logic board dock. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Tilt the logic board away from the enclosure. Align the two screw holes in the logic board with the two pins on the dock insert.

    • Caution: Don’t pinch or stretch the flex cable. Avoid touching components on the logic board.

  7. Non-mmWave only: Use the torque driver and trilobe bit to remove one trilobe screw from the back glass connector cowling. Then complete the entire step.

    • Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the end of the back glass flex cable from the connector on the logic board.

    • Lift the dock insert with logic board out of the dock.

    • Lift the logic board off the dock insert. Place the logic board on a clean, flat surface.

Caution

  • If you're repairing a non-mmWave model, follow reassembly steps 1 through 3. Then skip to step 7 and follow the remaining steps to complete reassembly.

  • If you're repairing an mmWave model, skip to reassembly step 4. Then follow the remaining steps to complete reassembly.

  1. non-mmWave models: Place the logic board onto the logic board dock insert (non-mmWave). Align the screw holes on the logic board with the pins on the dock insert.

    • Place the dock insert with the logic board into the dock.

  2. Non-mmWave models: Press the end of the back glass flex cable to the connector on logic board.

    • Caution: Don't pull or stretch the flex cable.

    • Position the back glass connector cowling on the logic board by inserting the cowling tab into the slot as shown.

    • Use the black torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-13720) into the back glass connector cowling.

  3. Non-mmWave models: Slowly lift the logic board off the dock insert pins and tilt it toward the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don't pull or stretch the back glass flex cable.

    • Position the logic board into the lip of the enclosure.

      • Caution: Only hold the logic board by the edges. Don't pull or stretch the flex cables. Be careful not to pinch flexes inside the enclosure.

    • Move the side button flex cable (1), two USB-C connector flex cables (2), and the action and volume flex cables (3) out of the way as you position the logic board into the enclosure.

    • Caution: Ensure that the two USB-C connector flex cables (1), the action and volume button flex cables (2), and the side button flex cable (3) aren't trapped beneath the logic board.

    • Skip to step 7 and follow the remaining steps to complete reassembly.

  4. mmWave models: Align the two screw holes in the logic board with the two pins on the logic board dock insert (mmWave). Flip the lock mechanism closed to secure the logic board to the dock insert.

    • Place the dock insert with the logic board into the dock.

  5. mmWave models: Press the ends of the back glass flex cable (1) and mmWave flex cable (2) to connectors on the logic board.

    • Caution: Don't pull or stretch the flex cables.

    • Position the two connector cowlings over the ends of the flex cables.

      • Caution: Ensure that the back glass connector cowling tab (top) and the mmWave connector cowling hook are properly engaged.

    • Use the black torque driver and trilobe bit to install two new trilobe screws (923-13270) into the two connector cowlings.

  6. mmWave models: Press the release arm to flip open the lock mechanism on the logic board dock insert to unlock the logic board.

    • Slowly lift the logic board off the dock insert pins and tilt it toward the enclosure. Position the logic board into the lip of the enclosure.

    • Caution: Hold the logic board only by the edges. Don't pull or stretch the flex cables or pinch them inside the enclosure.

    • Move the side button flex cable (1), two USB-C connector flex cables (2), and the action and volume button flex cables (3) out of the way as you position the logic board into the enclosure.

    • Caution: Ensure that no cables are trapped underneath the logic board.

  7. Remove the dock insert from the dock.

  8. Remove the repair tray from the dock.

  9. Press the ends of seven flex cables (1–7) to the connectors.

    • Important: Flex cable (4) lies under (3), and flex cable (6) lies under (5).

  10. Position the logic board connector cowling in the enclosure.

    • Caution: Hook the cowling tab into place first. Then lower the cowling over the end of the flex cables.

    • Use the black torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-13720) into the logic board connector cowling.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Caution

  • System Configuration is required if you’ve installed a replacement logic board. Disregard notifications about iPhone features on the Lock Screen until you complete configuration.
