iPad mini (A17 Pro) Volume Buttons
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following part before you begin:
Tools
8.3-inch repair tray
Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes
JCIS bit for crosshead screws
Micro stix bit
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)
Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)
Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal for Wi-Fi Models
Important
If you're removing the volume buttons from a Wi-Fi + Cellular model, skip to Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular Models.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the two crosshead screws from the front camera connector cowling and three crosshead screws from the camera connector cowling. Set aside the screws. Then remove the cowlings and save them for reassembly.
Peel off two pieces of grounding tape (1, 2). Peel off two air loop gaskets (3, 4). Then peel off the foam (5) and shim (6) from the speaker.
Lift the ends of the antenna coaxial cable and volume buttons flex cable off the connectors.
Peel off the grounding tape from the speaker.
Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove five trilobe screws (1-5) from the antenna. Then use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove five crosshead screws (6-10) from the antenna. Set aside the screws.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove two crosshead screws from the volume buttons bracket. Set aside the screws.
Slide a black stick underneath the antenna carrier to separate the adhesive between the carrier and the enclosure. Then gently lift the antenna carrier from the enclosure as you pry the volume buttons flex cable and bracket out of the enclosure. Save the antenna carrier for reassembly.
Removal for Wi-Fi + Cellular Models
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the two crosshead screws from the front camera connector cowling. Set aside the screws. Then remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.
Lift the ends of the antenna coaxial cable and volume buttons flex cable off the connectors.
Use a torque driver and corresponding bit to remove 12 screws from the antenna, volume buttons flex cable, and volume buttons bracket.
Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove two trilobe screws (1-2). Set aside the screws.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove 10 crosshead screws (3-12). Set aside the screws.
Pry the volume buttons bracket from the enclosure. Remove the volume buttons flex cable and antenna. Then remove the volume buttons and volume buttons gasket from the opening in the enclosure.
Note: The antenna is attached to the volume buttons flex cable.
Reassembly for Wi-Fi Models
Important
If you're installing replacement volume buttons in a Wi-Fi + Cellular model, skip to Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular Models.
Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean any remaining adhesive residue from the enclosure.
Position the replacement volume buttons flex cable and bracket in the enclosure. Then use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-01355) into the volume buttons bracket.
Position the antenna carrier in the enclosure. Press the carrier to adhere it to the enclosure.
Peel the adhesive liner from replacement grounding tape. Then apply tape on the speaker.
Route and position the antenna as shown. Use the black torque driver and Micro stix bit to install five new trilobe screws (452-08788) (1-5) into the antenna. Then use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install five new crosshead screws (452-11675) (6-10) into the antenna.
Press the ends of the antenna coaxial cable and volume buttons flex cable to the connectors on the logic board.
Apply new grounding tape in the following areas as shown:
Over the antenna coaxial cable and volume button flex cable (1)
Over the volume button flex cable (2)
Apply two new air loop gaskets in the areas shown.
Apply new foam (1) and a new shim (2) over the speaker as shown.
Position the front camera connector cowling and camera connector cowling over the ends of the flex cables.
Use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-11675) into the front camera connector cowling and three new crosshead screws (452-11675) into the camera connector cowling.
Use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-07207) into the front camera connector cowling.
Reassembly for Wi-Fi + Cellular Models
Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean any remaining adhesive residue from the enclosure.
Position the replacement volume buttons and gasket in the opening of the enclosure. Align the replacement volume buttons flex cable, antenna, and bracket with the volume buttons and gasket in the enclosure.
Use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-01355) into the volume buttons bracket.
Install 10 new screws into the antenna and volume buttons flex cable.
Use the black torque driver and Micro stix bit to install two new trilobe screws (452-10067) into the antenna.
Use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install seven new crosshead screws into the antenna and volume buttons flex cable.

Use the gray torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-07206) into the antenna.
Press the ends of the antenna coaxial cable and volume buttons flex cable to the connectors.
Position the front camera connector cowling over the ends of the flex cables. Then use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-11675) into the cowling.
