iPad mini (A17 Pro) Speakers

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following part before you begin:

Tools

  • 8.3-inch repair tray

  • Adhesive removal tool

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • JCIS bit for crosshead screws

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Micro stix bit

  • Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

If you remove a speaker, you must replace it.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Complete the following steps to remove the bottom speaker.

    • Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

      • Warning: Don't make contact with the battery. If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  2. Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Continue to step 3.

    • Wi-Fi+Cellular models only: Skip to step 4.

  3. Wi-Fi models only: Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Lift the ends of the speaker cable and antenna coaxial cable off the connectors.

    • Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit, remove two crosshead screws from the front camera cowling. Remove one crosshead screw from the speaker. Set aside the screws. Then remove the cowling. Save the cowling for reassembly.

    • Remove the air loop gaskets, speaker foam, and shim from the speaker.

    • Peel the grounding tape off the speaker.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

      • Warning: Don't make contact with the battery. If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  4. Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Lift the ends of the speaker cable and antenna flex cables off the connectors.

    • Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the twelve crosshead screws from the front camera cowling, antenna coaxial cable grounding clip, and volume button bracket.

    • Gently peel the antenna flex cable from the speaker.

    • Use a torque driver and the Micro stix bit to remove two screws from the antenna.

    • Gently lift the antenna out of the enclosure.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Complete the following steps to install a replacement bottom speaker:

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the speaker.

    • Position the speaker in the enclosure. Press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to activate the adhesive.

  2. Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Continue to step 3.

    • Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Skip to step 4.

  3. Wi-Fi models only: Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the speaker.

    • Position the speaker in the enclosure. Press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to activate the adhesive.

    • Peel adhesive liner from the grounding tape. Then position the grounding tape over the speaker.

    • Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector. Press the end of the antenna coaxial cable to the connector.

    • Place the two air loop gaskets onto the speaker as shown.

    • Install the speaker foam as shown.

    • Install the shim as shown.

    • Use the black torque driver and the JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws into the cowling.

      • One crosshead screw (452-05343) (lower)

      • One crosshead screw (452-07207) (upper)

  4. Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the speaker.

    • Position the speaker in the enclosure. Press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to activate the adhesive.

    • Position the replacement volume buttons and gasket in the opening of the enclosure. Align the replacement volume buttons flex cable, antenna, and bracket with the volume buttons and gasket in the enclosure.

    • Press the end of the antenna flex cable to the connector. Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector. Then press the antenna coaxial cable to the connector.

    • Use the black torque driver and the JCIS bit to install six new crosshead screws (452-06325) into the antenna.

    • Use the black torque driver and the Micro stix bit to install two new trilobe screws (452-10067) into the antenna.

    • Use the gray torque driver and the JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-01355) into the antenna.

    • Use the green torque driver and the JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-01355) into the antenna.

    • Use the black torque driver and the JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws into the cowling (452-05343). Then install one new crosshead screw (452-06443) into the antenna coaxial cable grounding clip.
