iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) Volume Buttons
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following part before you begin:
Tools
13-inch repair tray
Adhesive removal tool
Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes
JCIS bit for crosshead screws
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)
Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal
Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the four crosshead screws from the camera connector cowling. Set aside the screws. Then remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.
Lift the end of the top button flex cable off the connector and gently move it aside. Then lift the end of the volume buttons flex cable off the connector.
Wi-Fi models only: Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the two crosshead screws from the volume buttons bracket. Set aside the screws.
Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove three crosshead screws from the antenna and two crosshead screws from the volume buttons bracket. Set aside the screws.
Note: The antenna is attached to the volume buttons flex cable.
Use the adhesive removal tool to break the glue between the volume buttons bracket and enclosure. Then pry the volume buttons flex cable and bracket out of the enclosure.
Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the four crosshead screws from the two volume button caps and retainers. Remove the volume button caps and retainers from the enclosure.
Note: The plungers will fall out when you remove the caps and retainers.
Reassembly
Use the black stick to break away any remaining glue from the volume buttons area in the enclosure. Then use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean any remaining adhesive residue.
Remove the iPad from the repair tray. Position two replacement volume button caps in the enclosure. Position two replacement volume buttons retainers into the caps. Then use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install four crosshead screws (452-05786) into the retainers and caps.
Note: The screws pass through the retainers and button caps and secure into the enclosure.
Place the iPad into the repair tray with the USB-C connector facing the cutout on the right side. Pull the tab on the left side of the repair tray to secure the iPad. Install two replacement volume button plungers into the volume button caps and retainers. Then position the replacement volume buttons flex cable and bracket into the opening of the enclosure.
Press the volume buttons to ensure they click as expected. If the volume buttons click as expected, continue to step 5. If they don't, repeat removal steps 5 and 6. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 4.
Use the green torque driver and JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-02923) into the volume buttons bracket.
Wi-Fi+Cellular models only: Use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install three new crosshead screws (452-02920) into the antenna.
Press the end of the volume buttons flex cable to the connector. Then press the end of the top button flex cable to the connector.
Position the camera connector cowling over the ends of the flex cables. Then use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install four new crosshead screws into the cowling.
