iPad (A16) Volume Buttons
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following parts before you begin:
Tools
11-inch repair tray
Adhesive removal tool
ESD-safe tweezers
Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes
JCIS bit for crosshead screws
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)
Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Important
If you replace this part, it's recommended to run Repair Assistant in order to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.
Removal
Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.
Use the torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the crosshead screw from the camera connector cowling. Set aside the screw. Then remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.
Gently peel back the ambient light sensor from the volume buttons bracket.
Use the torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove two crosshead screws from the volume buttons bracket and one crosshead screw from the volume buttons flex cable. Set aside the screws.
Lift the end of the camera flex cable off the connector and gently move it aside.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel back the polyester film tab from the end of the volume buttons flex cable.
Flip up the locking lever on the volume buttons flex cable (1). Then slide the flex cable out of the connector (2).
Wi-Fi+Cellular models only: Lift the end of the antenna coaxial cable off the connector and gently move it aside.
Peel the microphone off the enclosure.
Note: The microphone is attached to the volume buttons flex cable.
Use the adhesive removal tool to break the glue between the volume buttons bracket and enclosure. Then pry the volume buttons flex cable and bracket out of the enclosure.
Press the volume buttons from the outside to push them through and out of the enclosure.
Reassembly
Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove any remaining pieces of the volume buttons gasket from the enclosure.
Then use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean any residual adhesive from the volume buttons opening (1) and microphone area (2).
Position the replacement volume buttons with gaskets in the opening of the enclosure.
Install replacement adhesive onto the microphone area in the enclosure.
Position the replacement volume buttons flex cable and bracket in the opening of the enclosure. Then use the blue torque driver and JCIS bit to install two new crosshead screws (452-11913) into the volume buttons bracket.
Press the volume buttons to ensure they click as expected. If the volume buttons click as expected, continue to step 5. If they don't, remove the volume buttons flex cable, bracket, volume buttons, and gasket. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 5.
Use the blue torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-12345) into the volume buttons flex cable.
Press the microphone for 10 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.
Slide the end of the volume buttons flex cable into the connector. Flip down the locking lever. Then press the polyester film tab onto the connector.
Wi-Fi+Cellular models only: Press the end of the antenna coaxial cable to the connector.
Bend the ambient light sensor flex cable to align the ambient light sensor with the middle of the volume buttons bracket. Gently press the ambient light sensor for 10 seconds to adhere it to the volume buttons bracket.
Press the end of the camera flex cable to the connector.
Position the camera connector cowling over the end of the camera flex cable. Then use the gray torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-11910) into the cowling.
Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Note: If you have not run Repair Assistant, the device’s parts and service history may show a part status of “finish repair,” and Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair may show a part status of “unknown.”
