iPad (A16) Speakers

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 11-inch repair tray

  • Adhesive removal tool

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • JCIS bit for crosshead screws

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (black, 0.35 kgf cm)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

If you remove a speaker, you must replace it.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Complete the following steps to remove the bottom speaker.

    • Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

      • Warning: Don't make contact with the battery. If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  2. Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Continue to step 3.

    • Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Skip to step 4.

  3. Wi-Fi models only: Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

    • Peel up the two air loop gaskets to remove them from the speaker.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to cut the antenna grounding tape along the two areas shown.

      • Warning: Don't make contact with the battery. If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

    • Gently lift the antenna coaxial cables off the speaker.

    • Peel the grounding tape off the speaker. Then slide the speaker cable out from under the antenna coaxial cables.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker out of the enclosure.

      • Warning: Don't make contact with the battery. If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  4. Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Complete the following steps to remove the top speaker.

    • Lift the end of the speaker cable off the connector.

    • Peel back the polyester film tab.

    • Flip up the locking lever. Then slide the antenna flex cable out from under the connector.

    • Gently peel the antenna flex cable from the speaker.

    • Use the adhesive removal tool to pry the speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Complete the following steps to install a replacement bottom speaker.

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the speaker.

    • Position the speaker in the enclosure. Then press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to activate the adhesive.

    • Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

    • Apply replacement shim and foam to the top of the speaker as shown.

  2. Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Wi-Fi models only: Continue to step 3.

    • Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Skip to step 4.

  3. Wi-Fi models only: Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

    • Position the replacement speaker in the enclosure. Press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to ensure that the speaker adheres to the enclosure.

    • Position the replacement antenna grounding tape over the speaker. Ensure the tape is positioned under the two antenna coaxial cables.

    • Peel the first release liner and adhere the end of the antenna grounding tape to the enclosure as shown.

    • Peel the second release liner. Then press along the length of the antenna grounding tape to adhere the antenna grounding tape to the speaker as shown.

    • Slowly peel the third release liner. Use the flat end of the black stick to press the antenna grounding tape into the gap between the speaker and battery. Then gently run the flat end of the black stick over the antenna grounding tape to adhere it to the enclosure.

    • Peel the fourth release liner.

    • Press the tape to adhere it to the enclosure as shown.

    • Peel the liners as shown.

    • Adhere the coaxial cables to the speaker as shown.

    • Install the two air loop gaskets into the speaker.

    • Install three foam strips as shown.

    • Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

  4. Wi-Fi + Cellular models only: Complete the following steps to install a replacement top speaker.

    • Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean all residual adhesive from the enclosure.

    • Peel the adhesive liner from the bottom of the replacement speaker.

    • Position the replacement speaker in the enclosure. Press the four areas shown for 20 seconds each to activate the adhesive.

    • Adhere the antenna flex cable to the speaker and connect the antenna flex cable to the connector. Flip the locking lever down.

    • Adhere the polyester film tab.

    • Press the end of the speaker cable to the connector.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
