iPad Broken Glass Safety

 Warning

iPad displays are made of glass. The glass can break if the iPad is dropped on a hard surface, receives a substantial impact, or is crushed, bent, or deformed. Don’t attempt to remove chipped or cracked glass shards without protection.

If the display glass is broken, perform the following steps before beginning a repair:

  1. Put on safety glasses with side shields and the cut-resistant gloves.

  2. Use an ESD-safe vacuum cleaner to remove glass pieces from your workspace and the iPad.

  3. Attach the model-specific display protective cover to the broken glass to prevent injury or scattering of glass. Orient the iPad so the volume buttons are on the bottom right. Then position the protective cover so the adhesive strips align at the top right as shown.

  4. Each protective cover has a release liner underneath. Slowly pull the release liner out from under the protective cover while pressing the cover onto the enclosure.

  5. Use an access card to firmly press the protective cover onto the broken glass and smooth out any air bubbles.

  6. Wait at least 12 minutes for the bond between the protective cover and the glass to strengthen.

  7. Remove the liner from the support plate adhesive.

  8. Align the top right corner of the support plate with the top right corner of the display as shown.

  9. Firmly press the support plate to adhere it to the protective cover.

  10. Place the iPad in the model-specific heated display pocket with the support plate aligned with the top and right sides.

  11. Complete the removal steps in the model-specific display procedure. Then continue to step 12.

  12. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all glass from the enclosure.

  13. Use an ESD-safe vacuum cleaner to remove glass pieces from your workspace and the heated display pocket.

  14. Pull the adhesive strips out from under the support plate to remove it from the display. Save the support plate for reuse.

If the iPad has any of the following conditions, stop the repair:

  • There’s no glass or insufficient glass for the protective cover to adhere to.

  • The protective cover doesn’t adhere to the iPad.

  • The iPad doesn’t fit in the heated display pocket.
