Set up a card in Wallet to ride transit with Apple Pay

If you use your transit agency's app

When you download your transit agency's app, you might be able to use it for additional services, like the following:

  • Set up a new transit card
  • Transfer the balance of your virtual card
  • Add funds to your transit card

You might need to contact your transit agency to see if you can add funds to your transit card in their app.

Set up a card in Wallet for Express Transit

You can set up an eligible card in Wallet to use for Express Transit.3 Check with your transit agency to see which cards are eligible to use for Express Transit in Wallet. Just follow these steps to set up an eligible payment card or transit card in Wallet:

Set up a new payment card

To set up a credit, debit, or prepaid card for Express Transit with Apple Pay, follow these steps:

For iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the add button The Add button.
  2. Follow the steps to add a new card.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. Turn on Express Transit for your new card.

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Add Card.
  3. Follow the steps to add a new card, then tap Next.
  4. Turn on Express Transit for your new card.

Set up a new transit card in Wallet

You can set up a new transit card to use for Express Transit with Apple Pay in Wallet:

  1. Check that the Region on your device is correct.
    • On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Language & Region, then scroll down to Region.
    • For your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. Then tap General > Language & Region and check your Region.
  2. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap the add button The Add button, then tap Continue.
  4. Tap your city's transit card, then choose an amount to put on the card and tap Add.4
  5. Follow the steps to create a new transit card on your iPhone.
  6. Turn on Express Transit for your new transit card.

Transit card use might be limited based on regional availability. Some transit cards might not be available in your area. You might need to contact your transit agency to see if adding transit cards to Wallet is supported in your city or region.

The first transit card that you add to Wallet automatically becomes your Express Transit card. You can change your Express Transit card in Wallet at any time.

After your card is set up in Wallet, you might be able to add money to your transit card. Just open Wallet on your iPhone or Apple Watch, tap your transit card, then tap Add Money. If you don't see Add Money, contact your local transit agency to see how you can add money to your transit card in Wallet.

Transfer the balance of your physical transit card to Wallet

First, make sure the Region on your device is correct:

  • For iPhone, go to Settings > General > Language & Region, then scroll down to Region.
  • For Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. Then tap General > Language & Region and check your Region.

When your Region is set, follow these steps:

For iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap the add button The Add button, then tap Continue.
  2. Tap the name of the transit card you want to add.
  3. Tap Transfer Existing Card.
  4. Enter the 4 or 5 digits of your card number and other required information that you're asked to enter.5
  5. Rest the top of your iPhone on the transit card until you see "Card Added" on the screen. This process could take a few minutes to complete.

 

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Add Card, then tap Continue.
  4. Tap the name of the transit card you want to add.
  5. Tap Transfer Existing Card.
  6. Follow the steps to transfer the balance.

When you transfer your balance to Wallet, your physical card might no longer work. If you don't see the transit card you're looking for, it might not be available in your area.

If you see "No card detected" or "Could not add card"

If your iPhone has a case, take off the case or remove any metal that might come between your iPhone and your physical card. Then, try to transfer your card to Wallet again. Make sure that the top of your iPhone is resting on your physical card and remains still.

Turn on Express Transit

When you turn on Express Transit for a card, you can quickly pay for rides without using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Here's how to turn on Express Transit for a payment card or transit card:

For iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select a card, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Watch App app on your iPhone and select the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select a card, then authenticate with your Apple Watch passcode.

How to move your transit card

Unlike credit and debit cards in Wallet, transit cards can only exist on one device at a time.2 You can move your transit card from your iPhone to your Apple Watch or you can move your transit card from an older iPhone to a new iPhone.

How to move your transit card from your iPhone to your Apple Watch

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. If you have multiple watches, choose one.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Scroll down to the transit card that you want to move to your Apple Watch.
  4. Then, tap the Add button next to the card.

You can use the Watch app to move your card back to your iPhone when you aren't in transit.

How to move your transit card to a new iPhone

  1. On your current iPhone, open the Wallet app and tap your transit card.
  2. Tap the more button .
  3. Scroll down and tap Remove This Card, then tap Remove.
  4. On your new iPhone, open the Wallet app and tap the add button .
  5. Under Transit Cards, tap your transit card.
  6. Add your transit card to the new iPhone.

  1. If you sign out of iCloud or turn off Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode on your iPhone or Apple Watch, all credit, debit, and transit cards are removed from that device. When you remove a transit card from any device, the remaining balance will be stored and available to be transferred to the same or another iPhone or Apple Watch that is connected to a network and signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.
  2. Apple Pay isn't available for children under 13. Age varies by country or region.
  3. In some locations where you can pay for transit using a payment card in the Wallet app, Express Transit might automatically be turned on for your device. See where you can use Express Transit to pay for rides with Apple Pay.
  4. A Hong Kong-issued Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay card that you use with Apple Pay is required to purchase or top up an Octopus card in the Wallet app. If you have a credit or debit card that isn't issued in Hong Kong, use the Octopus App for Tourists app instead.
  5. In Hong Kong, your Date of birth and Hong Kong ID are required for personalized Octopus cards and cards with Automatic Add Value Service (AAVS) turned on.
