Find out what to do.

If you see a "Software Update Required" error message

You'll need to update the software on the device you're using as a home hub. If you're not sure which device is your home hub, update the software for all devices.

iPad (5th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later) and all iPad Pro models support the latest version of iPadOS.

If you see a "Home Hub Required" error message

If you're trying to set up a home accessory and you receive this error message, you'll need to set up a device as a home hub.

If you've already set up a home hub

Follow these steps. After each step, try to pair your accessory again.

  1. Turn your home hub device off and then on again.

  2. Try using a device that's signed in to the Apple ID account that was used to set up the Home app.

  3. If your home hub is an Apple TV that's connected to the internet with an Ethernet cable, connect your Apple TV to Wi-Fi instead. Connect it to the same Wi-Fi network that your iOS device is using.

  4. Check that your Wi-Fi is connected and there's no interference.

  5. Reset the network settings on your iOS device that's displaying the error message.

  6. If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or other third-party security software, find out what to do.
