Intro to configuration management
You can streamline deployments of Apple devices you own using management tools that simplify account setup, configuration of institutional policies, distribution of apps, and application of restrictions. To achieve this level of automated deployment, two services must be used in tandem, an MDM solution, and Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.
An MDM solution securely enrolls Apple devices in an organization, wirelessly configures and updates device settings, monitors policy compliance, deploys apps and books, and remotely wipes or locks managed devices.
Several MDM solutions are available. Each solution offers its own management console, features, and pricing. Before choosing an MDM solution, administrators should review this chapter to see which features are most important to their organization.
Apple Business Manager allows organizations to use federated authentication, buy apps and books, automate user or device enrollment into an MDM solution, and create Managed Apple IDs.
Apple School Manager allows educational institutions to use federated authentication, connect to their Student Information System (SIS), buy apps and books, automate user or device enrollment into an MDM solution, and create Managed Apple IDs.
After the devices are set up, you can manage them wirelessly.
