Get help using iCloud for Windows

If you need help downloading, installing, setting up, or updating iCloud for Windows, try the steps below. 

Try these steps first

  1. Install any updates on your computer, and check for updates to iCloud for Windows.
  2. Make sure that you meet the system requirements for iCloud for Windows.
  3. Check your Internet connection. Try to go to www.apple.com or another webpage.
  4. Check the System Status page to find out if there are any known issues. 

Then try the steps below for your issue.

Install and set up iCloud for Windows

There are two versions of iCloud for Windows:

  • iCloud for Windows 7.x works with versions of Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and early versions of Windows 10. iCloud for Windows 7.x gets maintenance updates only.
  • iCloud for Window 10 works with the May 2019 Update version of Microsoft Windows 10 and later versions of Microsoft Windows 10, and has better integration with Microsoft Windows.

If you are running the May 2019 Update version of Microsoft Windows 10, or later versions, Apple recommends iCloud for Windows 10.

If you have a Microsoft account, you can download iCloud for Windows 10. If you need to create a Microsoft account, you can create one on the Microsoft website.

When you install iCloud for Windows 10, it will uninstall any previous versions of iCloud for Windows for all users.

Before you try to install or set up iCloud for Windows 7.x, log in as an administrator. You can use these steps to download iCloud for Windows on your PC, then set it up to automatically keep your documents, photos, bookmarks, and more up to date.

 

What if iCloud for Windows won't download?

If iCloud for Windows 10 won't download, follow these steps on the Microsoft support site.

For iCloud for Windows 7.x

If you can't download iCloud for Windows 7.x, try a different browser. You might need to confirm that you want to run or save the installer.

If you can't find iCloud for Windows 7.x after you download it, check your Downloads folder. You can check your browser's help for how to see recently downloaded files. For example, if you're using Internet Explorer, check this Microsoft article to see how to download files.

If you didn’t see a File Download window, you might need to change the settings for your browser’s pop-up blocker. Check the application's help for steps. 

I see a message that my computer is missing Media features

Windows Media Player plays the video and audio files on your PC. You need Media Player to install iCloud for Windows. If you try to download iCloud for Windows 10 and get a message that says you need to Install Media Feature Pack to use iCloud, select Download. Then follow the instructions on the next screen.

If you turned off Windows Media Features, or if your PC didn't come with Windows Media Player, iCloud for Windows won't install.

Follow these steps to turn on Windows Media Player:

If you turned off Windows Media Features from your Control Panel

  1. Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features.
  2. Click "Turn Windows features on or off."
  3. Check the box for Media Features to turn it back on.
  4. Click OK.

If you see a message to restart your PC, restart your computer and then install iCloud for Windows.

If you're in Europe or South Korea and your PC didn't come with Windows Media Player, you can download it at microsoft.com (included in the Media Feature Pack).

What if I want to update iCloud for Windows?

If you want to update iCloud for Windows 10, you can update when you visit the Microsoft Store.

How to update iCloud for Windows 7.x

To check for updates to iCloud for Windows 7.x, open Apple Software Update on your PC. Apple Software Update checks for updates automatically after you open it, and you can choose which updates you want to install.

You can also download the latest version of iCloud for Windows.

If iCloud for Windows doesn't update in Windows Apple Software Update 2.3, go to Windows Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options. In the Internet Properties dialog, click the Advanced tab. In the Settings section, under Security, make sure that you deselect the “Do not save encrypted pages to disk” checkbox. Try to update iCloud for Windows again.

I see a “can’t connect to server” message

  1. Check your Internet connection. Try to go to www.apple.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, you might need to contact your Internet provider for help.
  2. Check the System Status page to find out if there are any known issues. If there's an outage or maintenance, try again later. 

What if I can’t sign in to iCloud?

Use these steps if you forgot your Apple ID password. You can also use these steps to find your Apple ID user name.

Where can I find photos or files on iCloud for Windows?

To access your photos on iCloud for Windows 10, choose Start, then choose iCloud and select iCloud Photos.*

Your files live in iCloud Drive, with indicators that show their current status and where they are located:**

  • A closed green check  means the file is stored locally on your device, can be accessed offline, and isn't be eligible to be removed with Microsoft Storage Sense.
  • An open green check  means the file is stored locally on your device, can be accessed offline, and is eligilble to be removed with Microsoft Storage Sense.
  • A cloud icon  means the file is stored online and can only be accessed or downloaded when you are online.
  • A sync icon  means the file is being uploaded or downloaded, or is in queue to download or upload.

If you use iCloud for Windows 10, you can store a file or folder locally on your PC so you can access it without an internet connection:

  1. Open iCloud for Windows on your PC.
  2. Select iCloud Drive, then choose the file or folder you want to store locally.
  3. Right-click on the file and choose Always Keep on this Device.

You might also be able to choose Free Up Space to remove a locally stored file or folder. If you choose Free Up Space, the file or folder is removed from your device and can be accessed online in iCloud Drive.

*If you use iCloud for Windows 7.x, choose Start > iCloud > iCloud Photos.

**If you use iCloud for Windows 7.x, your files don't show status indicators.

If you can’t move files from iCloud in Windows

If you receive an error when you try to move a file from iCloud in Windows, you might need to download the file to your Windows PC. After you download the file, try moving it again.
