Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows

If you're experiencing issues with iTunes for Windows and have Windows 10, try downloading iTunes from the Microsoft Store instead.

If iTunes for Windows 7 or later won't open, stops responding, or unexpectedly quits, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

Before you start, download and install the latest available Windows updates for your PC and make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes. If you have Windows 10 and can download iTunes from the Microsoft Store, try that instead.

Disconnect your computer from the Internet

If your computer experiences errors when it tries to communicate with the iTunes Store and other Apple services, you might have issues with iTunes startup. Starting iTunes without an Internet connection can help you determine what's causing the startup problems.

  1. Close iTunes.
  2. Disconnect your computer from the Internet. For example, turn-off Wi-Fi or unplug your Ethernet cord.
  3. Reopen iTunes.

If iTunes opens with no issues while you're disconnected from the Internet, update your drivers. If you see an error message, contact Apple Support for help.

Test a new iTunes library

Create a new iTunes library to see if the issue occurs in a new library.

If using a new iTunes library resolves the issue, try to restore an older copy of your iTunes library. If an older library has the same issue, contact Apple Support for help with isolating the issue.

To change back to your original library, close iTunes, and then hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while you reopen the program.

Other issues

  1. Check for potentially unwanted programs. Harmful software might prevent iTunes from opening or cause it to quit unexpectedly. Make sure that your security software is up-to-date and scan your system.

  4. Update the drivers on your PC. Outdated drivers on your computer can cause iTunes and other applications to behave strangely.
