About the sweat and water resistance of AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation)

AirPods Pro (1st generation) are sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise, and have a rating of IPX4 under IEC standard 60529. The MagSafe Charging Case and Wireless Charging Case for AirPods Pro (1st generation) are not water resistant or sweat resistant. The AirPods and charging case for these models are sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise, and have a rating of IPX4 under IEC standard 60529:

  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (Lightning)

  • AirPods (3rd generation) with Lightning Charging Case

  • AirPods (3rd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case

AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C) are dust resistant, and sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise, and have a rating of IP54 under IEC standard 60529.

AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) are sweat and water resistant, but they are not waterproof or sweatproof. They aren’t designed for use in water sports, such as swimming, or for showering. After workouts, heavy sweating or water splashes, and before putting AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) into the charging case, wipe down your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't use heat or compressed air to dry your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation).

References to AirPods (3rd generation) below include the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation) and the Lightning Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation). References to AirPods Pro below include AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation), the MagSafe Charging Case (Lightning) for AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and the MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C) for AirPods Pro (2nd generation).

Keep your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) safe

Sweat, water and dust resistance aren’t permanent conditions and can diminish over time. AirPods and charging cases can’t be rechecked or resealed for sweat, water or dust resistance.

Follow these tips to avoid damage to your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation):

  • Don't place your AirPods under running water, such as a shower or tap.

  • Don't swim with or otherwise submerge your AirPods.

  • Don't put AirPods in the washing machine or dryer.

  • Don't wear AirPods in a sauna or steam room.

  • Don't expose AirPods to high-velocity water, such as while waterskiing.

  • Avoid dropping AirPods or subjecting them to other impacts.

If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to liquid through any of the scenarios above:

  • Wipe them clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

  • Allow them to dry completely before using them or placing them in the charging case.

Don't expose AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sun cream, oil or hair dye. All of these can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes. If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to any of these:

  • Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

  • Allow them to dry completely before using them or placing them in the charging case.

Do not attempt to charge wet AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation).

If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to dust, wipe them clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't use cleaning products or compressed air.
