Use Express Transit with Apple Pay

Quickly pay for rides with Apple Pay using Express Transit on your iPhone and Apple Watch without having to wake or unlock your device, or open an app. You don't even need to validate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

What you need to use Express Transit with Apple Pay

Before you start, set up a card in Wallet to use for Express Transit with Apple Pay. You can set up a new credit, debit, or prepaid card or a new transit card.

Pay for your ride with Express Transit

To use Express Transit, your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on, but they don't have to be connected to a network.

Use Express Transit on your iPhone

  1. Hold the top of your iPhone near the middle of the contactless reader.
  2. Wait until you feel a vibration.
  3. You see Done and a checkmark on the display.

Use Express Transit on your Apple Watch

  1. Hold the display of your Apple Watch near the middle of the contactless reader.
  2. Wait until you feel a vibration.
  3. You see Done and a checkmark on the display.

When you pay at a contactless reader, keep the card or device that you want to pay with separate from your other cards or devices. This can help avoid card clash so that the correct card is charged. Card clash may occur when your card and your device are accidentally used at the same time. Contact your transit agency to learn more about card clash, or if you think the wrong card was charged.

If you want to use Face ID or Touch ID to ride transit, you can turn off Express Transit for Apple Pay in the Settings app.

You can have a payment card and a transit card enabled for Express Transit in the same city. If your transit agency accepts payment cards and transit cards, the transit card is automatically selected by the contactless reader.

If a transaction does not complete, check with your transit agency to see if Express Transit is supported at that location. Then, follow the instructions on the contactless reader. You might need to select another card in Wallet to pay for your ride:

  1. Double-click the side or Home button.
  2. Select a card.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

Add money to your transit card

You can add money to your transit card on your iPhone or Apple Watch with Apple Pay.4

On iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app, then tap your transit card.
  2. Tap Add money, choose an amount to add to your transit card, then tap Add.
  3. Select the card you want to pay with, then complete the transaction with Face ID or Touch ID.

On Apple Watch

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Tap your transit card.
  3. Tap Add Money, then follow the instructions on the screen.

If you don't see Add Money, check with your local transit agency to see how you can add money to your transit card in Wallet.

Before you start your trip, make sure that you have enough money on your transit card in Apple Pay for the entire journey. Or make sure that you have a credit, debit, or prepaid card in Apple Pay that you can use to pay the fare. Also, make sure that your battery has enough charge to last the entire journey.

If you add money and your transit card balance doesn't update in the Wallet app, learn what you can do.

Express Transit cards with power reserve

You can use power reserve with your Express Transit cards to quickly pay for rides. Power reserve is available for up to five hours when your iPhone needs to be charged.

To see if Express Transit cards are available when your iPhone needs to be charged, press the side button. Doing this often may significantly reduce the power reserve for Express Transit cards. If you choose to power off your iPhone, this feature will not be available.

*You can use Express Transit cards with power reserve with iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later.
