Make Apple Pay transactions when the Wallet app is not set as your default contactless app.

Features in this article are only available to iOS users in countries or regions of the European Economic Area.

If you live in the European Economic Area and your iPhone has iOS 17.4 or later, you can set another eligible contactless app, instead of Apple Wallet, as your default contactless app.

The European Economic Area includes all countries in the European Union, as well as Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway.

Making Apple Pay transactions

If you select another contactless app as your default app, it will impact how you use Apple Pay and Wallet. When you double-click the side button or hold your iPhone near a contactless reader in-store, your selected app will launch automatically after you have unlocked your iPhone. The cards you've saved in your Apple Wallet to make Apple Pay transactions will no longer be presented.

To make contactless transactions with Apple Pay

  1. On your iPhone, open the Wallet app.

  2. Select your card.

  3. Double-click the side button to authenticate with Face ID or enter your passcode before making a payment.

If you want Apple Pay and the Wallet app to launch automatically when you double-click the side button or hold your iPhone near a contactless reader, you'll need to select Apple Wallet as your default contactless app in Settings.

Using Express Mode

Express Mode will continue to work even if Apple Wallet is not your default app. With Express Mode, you can use some cards, keys and passes in Apple Wallet without waking or unlocking your device, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

When you’re making a payment with any contactless app, Express Mode will be suppressed to avoid interacting with your contactless transaction.
