If you forget your new passcode, use your old passcode to unlock your iPhone or iPad within 72 hours
Passcode Reset allows you to use your old password temporarily to regain access to your iPhone or iPad – without the need to use a computer or to reset your device.
About Passcode Reset
When you change your passcode in iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and later, Passcode Reset gives you 72 hours during which you can still access your iPhone or iPad using your previous passcode. If you unlock your device this way, you’ll be prompted to change your passcode again immediately.
If you forget your passcode, try Passcode Reset first. If you can’t use Passcode Reset, you can then reset your iPhone or iPad without a computer to regain access to your Apple device. Finally, if you can’t use Passcode Reset and can’t reset your iPhone or iPad on your device, you can reset your iPhone or iPad with a computer.
How to use Passcode Reset
On your Lock Screen after five incorrect passcode attempts, the “[Device] Unavailable” screen appears. When prompted, tap Forgot Passcode? in the bottom corner of the screen.
Tap Enter Previous Passcode.
Enter your old passcode, then follow the onscreen instructions to set a new passcode.
If you use iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or later, the Forgotten Passcode? option will appear when you are locked out, connected to a mobile or Wi-Fi network, signed in to your Apple Account and have Find My turned on.
If you use iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, an Erase [Device] option will appear when you are locked out, connected to a mobile or Wi-Fi network, signed in to your Apple Account and have Find My turned on.
Expire an old passcode sooner than 72 hours
