If you can’t join a shared password group

You may have to update your device or accept the group invitation in Passwords in the Settings app.

Shared password groups

Shared password groups offer an easy, secure way to share passwords and passkeys with members of your family and other trusted contacts. When you join a shared password group, passwords and passkeys that have been shared in the group will be suggested automatically when you sign in on websites or apps.

  • Choose which passwords to share and delete your passwords from the group at any time.

  • Anyone in the group can add passwords and all shared passwords will be kept in sync on everyone’s devices.

  • The person who created the group can add or remove other members or delete the group. You’ll receive a notification whenever anyone else has been invited to the group. You can leave the group at any time – and, when you leave, you’ll take your passwords and passkeys with you.

If you’ve received an invitation to a shared password group

When someone adds you to a shared password group, they have the option to notify you via Messages. When you tap the iMessage invitation, you should be taken to Passwords in the Settings app (or System Settings on your Mac) to view and respond to the invitation.

If Settings or System Settings doesn’t open or you can’t join a shared passwords group:

  • Update your iPhone, iPad or Mac to the latest software version. Then accept the invitation again in Passwords in the Settings app (or System Settings on Mac).

  • You may have received an invitation from someone who you don’t have saved in Contacts. If you’re sure you know and trust this person, you can accept the invitation in Passwords in the Settings app (or System Settings on Mac).

Update your iPhone, iPad or Mac

When you move a password or passkey to a shared password group, you’ll only be able to see that password or passkey on a device that’s running iOS 17 or later, iPadOS 17 or later, or macOS Sonoma or later. When you join a shared password group, you should update all of your Apple devices to make sure your passwords and passkeys are available everywhere.

Respond to the invitation in Settings or System Settings

  1. Open Settings (or System Settings on Mac).

  2. Scroll down and select Passwords.

  3. Select Group Invitations, then select View on the invitation.

In Settings, tap Passwords, then tap Group Invitations to join a shared password group
  4. Select Accept to join the group (or decline the invitation).

If you don’t recognise the person who invited you to the shared password group

You shouldn’t accept an invitation to a shared password group from someone you don’t know or trust. Instead, you should decline the invitation in Settings (or System Settings).
