Migrate content tokens to Apple School Manager
In Apps and Books, there are now two types of tokens associated with app and book licenses.
Legacy tokens are user-based tokens that are associated with the person that downloaded them. That person can only do the following:
Download the legacy token and upload it into their mobile device management (MDM) solution.
Assign and reassign apps they purchased to users and devices using their MDM solution.
Assign books they purchased to users using their MDM solution.
Note: Some Apple Books content is not available in certain countries or regions. To learn whether certain Apple Books content is available in your country or region, see the Apple Support article Availability of Apple programs for education and business.
Location tokens for each location
Content Managers can download a location token for locations where they have permissions, and they can upload the token to their MDM solution to assign books and assign and reassign apps. Make sure your institution uploads location tokens for all locations where purchases or transfers were made in Apps and Books.
Note: Before you start managing tokens, check with your mobile device management (MDM) vendor to learn which solution they support:
A single user-based token
Multiple user-based tokens
A single location-based token
Multiple location-based tokens
Assigned licenses vs unassigned licenses
If you have any licenses that are currently assigned to users or devices, those can’t be migrated until they’re unassigned. You should upload your legacy token and your new location token to your MDM solution.
If you don’t have any assigned licenses, all licenses will migrate to Apps and Books, and you can replace your legacy token with your location token.
