Mac Studio (2023) Logic Board

Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)

  • Adjustable torque wrench (2.5–25 Nm)

  • Antenna tool

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Kapton tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx T5 screwdriver

    • Note: Required if installing a replacement logic board.

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 10IP 50 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 20IP 70 mm bit

Caution

Removal

  1. Use the orange torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-09162) from the antenna coaxial cable connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Use the antenna tool to lift the ends of two of the three antenna coaxial cables (1, 2) off the connectors on the logic board.

  3. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the two 5IP screws (923-09168) from antenna 2.

  4. Lift antenna 2 out of the housing.

  5. Use the flat end of the black stick to press along the length of the antenna 3 coaxial cable to release the cable from the two antenna grounding clips in the housing.

  6. Use Kapton tape to secure the antenna 3 coaxial cable to the housing.

  7. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the two 5IP screws (923-09168) from antenna 1.

  8. Lift antenna 1 from the housing (1). Then secure antenna 1 to the logic board with a piece of Kapton tape (2).

    • Caution: Don’t damage the parts on the logic board.

  9. Apply Kapton tape inside the housing near the four logic board screws to avoid damaging the housing.

  10. Use the 2.5–25 Nm adjustable torque wrench and 20IP bit to partially loosen the four 20IP screws (923-08935) on the logic board.

  11. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 20IP bit to fully remove the four 20IP screws from the logic board.

  12. Tilt up the logic board as shown.

    • Note: The fan is attached to the logic board and can be used to help tilt up the logic board.

  13. Continue to tilt up the logic board. Slide it slightly toward the front of the housing until a gap appears between the back of the housing and the logic board (1). Ensure that the antenna coaxial cable (2) and fan flex cables (3) are free of the housing.

  14. Hold the fan and lift the logic board and fan out of the housing.

  15. If you're removing the logic board as part of another procedure, skip to reassembly step 8. If you're replacing the existing logic board, continue to step 16.

  16. Lift the end of the power supply signal cable off the connector on the logic board. Then remove the power supply signal cable from the logic board and save it for reassembly.

  17. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 10IP bit to remove the two 10IP screws (923-09153) from the bus bar.

  18. Remove the bus bar and save it for reassembly.

  19. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to remove the 8IP speaker standoff screw (923-07108) from the logic board. Save the standoff screw for reassembly.

  20. Remove the solid-state drive (SSD) modules, fan, and antenna 1 from the logic board and save them for reassembly.

Reassembly

Important

If you’re installing a replacement logic board, complete all reassembly steps. If you’re reinstalling the existing logic board, skip to reassembly step 8.

  1. Reinstall antenna 1, the fan, and the SSD modules onto the replacement logic board.

  2. Set the torque value of the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm. Then use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to install the 8IP speaker standoff screw (923-07108) into the replacement logic board.

  3. Remove the pull tab (1) from under the battery.

    • Important: Failure to remove the pull tab from under the battery will affect the functionality of the computer.

  4. Use the T5 screwdriver to remove the two T5 screws (923-07617) (2) from the battery cover on the replacement logic board. Save the battery, battery cover, and two T5 screws for battery reassembly.

  5. Position the bus bar on the replacement logic board. Align the bottom screw holes on the bus bar (1) with the screw holes on the logic board (2).

  6. Set the torque value of the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.7 Nm. Then use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 10IP bit to reinstall the two 10IP screws (923-09153) into the bus bar (2) and replacement logic board.

  7. Press the end of the power supply signal cable into the connector on the replacement logic board (3).

  8. Ensure that Kapton tape is applied inside the housing near the four screw mounts (1–4) for the logic board.

  9. Rotate the housing so the rear port openings face left. Hold the fan (1) to tilt down the thermal module end of the logic board (2) into the housing.

  10. Continue to tilt down the logic board and slide it toward the back of the housing (1). After the fan is below the edge of the housing, slide the logic board fully toward the back of the housing (2).

  11. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 20IP bit to partially reinstall the four 20IP screws (923-08935) into the logic board.

  12. Set the torque value of the 2.5–25 Nm adjustable torque wrench to 7.8 Nm. Then use the 2.5–25 Nm adjustable torque wrench and 20IP bit to fully reinstall the four 20IP screws into the logic board.

  13. Remove the Kapton tape from the housing and the antenna coaxial cable.

  14. Rotate the computer so the front ports are facing you.

  15. Remove the Kapton tape securing antenna 1 to the logic board (1). Then position antenna 1 in the housing (2).

  16. Set the torque value of the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the two 5IP screws (923-09168) into antenna 1.

  17. Position antenna 2 in the housing.

  18. Set the torque value of the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the two 5IP screws (923-09168) into antenna 2.

  19. Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the ends of the two antenna coaxial cables over the connectors.

  20. Use the blunt end of the antenna tool to press the ends of the antenna coaxial cables (1 and 2) to the connectors on the logic board.

  21. Position the antenna connector cowling over the ends of the antenna coaxial cables. Then use the orange torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-09162) into the antenna connector cowling.

  22. Use the black stick to press the antenna 3 coaxial cable into the two antenna coaxial cable grounding clips on the housing.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Caution

  • After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.

  • If you replaced the logic board, the computer won’t start up and the status indicator light will flash amber. Follow the instructions to restore the Mac. Then initiate the System Configuration process.
