Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Crosshead 50 mm bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

Avoid touching the camera lenses, front camera grounding springs, or nearby parts.

Important

If you replace this part, it’s recommended to run Repair Assistant to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Putting on the gloves and covering the camera lenses to prevent contamination of the camera lenses is recommended.

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove three trilobe screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the logic board lower cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and the back glass flex cable (2) off the connectors.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove the crosshead screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove three screws from the logic board upper cowling and two screws from the camera.

    • Remove the logic board upper cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Remove one screw from the camera.

    • Lift the end of the button flex cable off the connector.

      • Caution: The button flex cable is fragile. Be careful not to break or tear it.

    • Lift the ends of the camera flex cables off the connectors.

    • Remove the camera.

  • Note: Some screws may come in a bag labeled with a 452 part number. They will be included with the screw kits, but can be ordered separately using the equivalent 923 part number.

    • 452-13290 = 923-13876

    • 452-11850 = 923-13864

    • 452-12603 = 923-13872

    • 452-11882 = 923-13867

    • 452-12363 = 923-13855

    • 452-11831 = 923-13862

Important

A protective cover is included with a replacement camera. Leave the cover on while installing the new camera.

  1. Put on the gloves to prevent contamination of the camera lenses.

  2. Inspect the grounding springs on the camera for damage before reassembly. Ensure that the grounding springs aren’t bent or broken.

    • Important: If the grounding springs are broken or bent, you may need to replace the camera.

  3. Position the camera in the enclosure.

  4. Press the ends of the two camera flex cables to the connectors.

  5. Press the end of the button flex cable to the connector.

  6. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 19 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install the following three new crosshead screws into the camera:

    • One screw (923-13696) (1)

    • One screw (923-13695) (2)

    • One screw (923-13971) (3)

  7. Reinstall the logic board upper cowling. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13872) into the logic board upper cowling.

  8. Use the gray torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-13855) into the logic board upper cowling.

  9. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-13862) into the logic board upper cowling.

Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:

Important

  • Remove the protective cover from the replacement camera before you reinstall the back glass.

  • After you’ve completed all reassembly steps, Repair Assistant will be available on the device and is recommended to finish the repair. Learn how to initiate Repair Assistant.
