 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torx Plus 4IP 25 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

  1. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the bottom right edge of the input/output (I/O) connector cowling tape.

  2. Use tweezers to peel the I/O connector cowling tape off the I/O connector cowling.

  3. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the four 3IP screws (923-10367) from the I/O connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  4. Use the pointed end of the black stick to lift the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable off the connector on the logic board.

    • Caution: Don't touch any of the small parts on the logic board.

  5. Gently peel back the polyester film tab from the other end of the open/close (AMR) sensor (1). Then use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the connector (2).

  6. Grasp the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor near the logic board. Then peel back the open/close (AMR) sensor to slide the end of the keyboard backlight flex cable from the connector on the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor.

    • Note: Use the black stick to release the adhesive between the open/close (AMR) sensor and top case if necessary.

  7. Use the flat end of the black stick and an ethanol wipe or an IPA wipe to remove any residual adhesive from the top case.

Reassembly

  1. Partially peel back the keyboard backlight flex cable from the top case.

  2. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 4IP bit to install one 4IP screw (923-10387) into the top case.

  3. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the two adhesive liners from the replacement open/close (AMR) sensor.

    • Important

      • Don't remove the other two adhesive liners yet.

      • Don't remove the replacement open/close (AMR) sensor from the pre-attached alignment tool.

  4. Position the hole in the alignment tool over the 4IP screw in the top case.

  5. Press the alignment tool in the area shown for 30 seconds to adhere the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable to the top case. Then lift the alignment tool off the top case.

  6. Slide the end of the keyboard backlight flex cable into the connector on the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor (1).

  7. Use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the locking lever (2). Press the polyester film tab over the connector.

  8. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the two adhesive liners from the replacement open/close (AMR) sensor.

  9. Use the flat end of the black stick to press down the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable as shown. Ensure that the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable and keyboard backlight flex cable lie flat on the top case.

  10. Press the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable and the keyboard backlight flex cable to the top case as shown to adhere them to the top case.

  11. Press the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable to the connector on the logic board.

  12. Position the I/O connector cowling in the top case.

  13. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the four 3IP screws (923-10367) into the I/O connector cowling.

  14. Use the adjustable torque driver and 4IP bit to remove the 4IP screw (923-10387) from the top case.

  15. Remove the adhesive backing from the I/O connector cowling tape.

  16. Align the I/O connector cowling tape with the upper right corner of the I/O connector cowling. Then press along the length of the tape to adhere it to the I/O connector cowling.

    • Caution: Ensure that the I/O connector cowling tape doesn’t extend over the edge of the cowling.

  17. Slightly peel back the top left corner of the top adhesive liner. Then slowly roll the liner off the I/O connector cowling tape.
