MacBook Air (15-inch, M3, 2024) Display
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following parts before you begin:
Tools
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)
ESD-safe tweezers
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)
Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit
Torx Plus 3IP 25 mm bit
Torx Plus 8IP 25 mm bit
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.
Caution
This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.
If you’re installing a replacement display, you must also install a replacement lid angle sensor.
Removal
Fully open the display and place the computer facedown on a clean surface with the display hanging down over the edge of the table.
Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 3IP 25 mm bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-09230) from the display flex cables cowling.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to gently peel back the foam from both ends of the display connectors cowling to access the two middle screws.
Important: Don't remove the foam from the cowling.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit to remove the four 3IP screws (923-08925) from the display connectors cowling.
Remove the display connectors cowling and save it for reassembly.
Use the black stick to lift the ends of the two display flex cables (1) and lid angle sensor flex cable (2) off the connectors.
Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to remove the eight 8IP screws (923-09561) from the display hinges.
Tilt up the display fully.
Caution: Ensure that the lid angle sensor flex cable (1) doesn’t get caught as you lift the display off the top case (2).
Reassembly
Position the display on the top case as shown.
Caution: Ensure that the lid angle sensor flex cable (1) and display flex cables (2) don’t get caught on the top case or logic board.
Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to partially reinstall eight 8IP screws (923-09561) into the display hinges.
Lift the top case off the table to close the display beneath it. Ensure that the display is aligned with the top case.
Set the torque value on the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.75 Nm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to fully reinstall the eight 8IP screws in the order shown.
Press the ends of the two display flex cables to the connectors on the logic board.
Important
If you're installing a replacement display, install a replacement lid angle sensor. Then reinstall the remaining parts to complete reassembly.
If you're reinstalling the existing display, continue to step 6.
Press the end of the lid angle sensor flex cable to the connector on the audio board.
Rotate the computer so the battery is closest to you.
Position the display connectors cowling over the ends of the display flex cables.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-08925) into the outer ends of the display connectors cowling.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel back the foam near the ends of the display connectors cowling to access the middle screw holes.
Important: Don't remove the foam cover from the cowling.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-08925) into the middle of the display connectors cowling.
Then gently press the foam over both screws.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP 25 mm bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-09230) into the display flex cables cowling.
Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
