Download and install large apps to a separate disk
In the App Store on Mac, you can choose to automatically download apps larger than 1 GB to an external APFS-formatted hard drive you chose in App Store Settings.
Important: To access applications downloaded to an external disk, the disk must be connected to your Mac. If the disk is not connected, you are prompted to redownload the application.
Go to the App Store app on your Mac.
Choose App Store > Settings, then select the checkbox next to “Download and install large apps to a separate disk.”
Choose the external disk from the pop-up menu.
Note: Large apps can only be downloaded and installed to an Apple File System (APFS) formatted disk. You can reformat a storage disk in Disk Utility.
Applications downloaded to an external disk are available in your Applications folder. They do not show up in Launchpad.
For more information on the Apple File System (APFS), see File system formats available in Disk Utility.
