MacBook Air (15-inch, M3, 2024) Open/Close (AMR) Sensor

Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • I/O connector cowling tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Note: This procedure requires input/output (I/O) connector cowling tape, which is included with a replacement logic board, but can also be ordered separately.

Removal

  1. Use the flat end of the black stick to peel up the lower right corner of the I/O connector cowling tape. Then peel the tape off the I/O connector cowling. Discard the tape.

  2. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the three 3IP screws (923-08925) from the I/O connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  3. Use the pointed end of the black stick to lift the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable off the connector on the logic board as shown.

    • Caution: Don't touch any of the small parts on the logic board.

  4. Gently peel back the polyester film tab from the other end of the open/close (AMR) sensor (1). Then use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the connector (2).

  5. Grasp the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor near the logic board and peel it from the top case.

    • Note: Use a black stick to release the adhesive between the sensor and top case if necessary.

  6. As you peel the open/close (AMR) sensor from the top case, slide the keyboard backlight flex cable from the connector on the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor.

    • Caution: Don’t damage the keyboard backlight flex cable. If damaged, you’ll need to replace the top case.

  7. Use the flat end of the black stick and an ethanol wipe or an IPA wipe to remove any residual adhesive from the top case.

Reassembly

  1. Partially peel back the keyboard backlight flex cable from the top case.

  2. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to install two 3IP screws (923-10475) into the top case.

  3. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the four release liners from the replacement open/close (AMR) sensor.

    • Important: Don't remove the replacement open/close (AMR) sensor from the pre-attached alignment tool.

  4. Position the two holes in the alignment tool over the two 3IP screws in the top case as shown.

  5. Use the pointed end of the black stick to lift the end of the keyboard backlight flex cable through the cutout in the alignment tool.

  6. Press the alignment tool in the area shown for 30 seconds to adhere the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable to the top case. Then lift the alignment tool off the top case.

  7. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-10475) from the top case.

  8. Slide the end of the keyboard backlight flex cable into the connector on the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor.

  9. Then use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the locking lever (1). Press the polyester film tab over the connector (2).

  10. Press the end of the open/close (AMR) sensor flex cable to the connector on the logic board.

  11. Position the I/O connector cowling over the ends of the flex cables.

  12. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the three 3IP screws (923-08925) into the I/O connector cowling.

  13. Remove the adhesive backing from the I/O connector cowling tape. Then align the tape with the right edge of the I/O connector cowling as shown.

    • Caution: Ensure that the I/O connector cowling tape doesn’t extend over the edge of the cowling.

  14. Press along the length of the I/O connector cowling tape to adhere it to the I/O connector cowling.

  15. Slightly peel back the top left corner of the top release liner. Then slowly roll the liner off the I/O connector cowling tape.
