MacBook Pro (14-inch, M3, Nov 2023) Logic Board

Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • #00 Phillips screwdriver

    • Note: Required only if installing a replacement logic board.

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm) (923-0735)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm) (923-02995)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Kapton tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm) (923-0448)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit (923-08468)

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit (923-08673)

  • Torx T6 security bit (923-00304)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

 Caution

Removal

  1. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the 15 3IP screws from the following seven cowlings:

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) from the Touch ID board connector cowling (1)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-06854) from the display connector cowlings (2, 3)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the lid angle sensor connector cowling (4)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (5)

    • Three 3IP screws (923-06854) from the USB-C boards connector cowling (6)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the audio board connector cowling (7)

  2. Remove the seven cowlings and set them aside for reassembly.

  3. Use the black stick to lift the ends of the following nine flex cables off the connectors on the logic board:

    • Touch ID board flex cable (1)

    • Display backlight power flex cable (2)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (3)

    • eDP flex cable (4)

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (5)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (6)

    • USB-C boards flex cables (7, 8)

    • Audio board flex cable (9)

  4. Gently peel the Touch ID board flex cable from the logic board.

  5. Lift the display cable clips off the internal frame of the top case. Gently fold them back over the edge of the top case to reveal the display cable bumpers underneath.

  6. Lift the display cable bumpers out of the top case. Save them for reassembly.

  7. Gently peel back the polyester film tab on the end of the fan flex cable (1). Then use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the connector (2).

  8. Spread the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the fan flex cable. Gently slide the tweezer tip under the flex cable to loosen the adhesive between the flex cable and logic board.

    • Caution

      • Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

      • Don't touch any of the small components on the logic board or fan flex cable.

  9. Slide the end of the fan flex cable from the connector.

  10. Gently peel the polyester film tabs off the ends of the following five flex cables:

    • Microphone flex cable (1)

    • Left speaker flex cable (2)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard flex cable (4)

    • Right speaker flex cable (5)

  11. Use the black stick to flip up the locking levers of the five flex cables (1-5). Then slide the ends of the flex cables from the connectors.

  12. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and Torx Plus 5IP bit to remove the following eight 5IP screws from the logic board:

    • Two 5IP screws (923-10092) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07039) (2)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07037) (3)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-08687) (4)

  13. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and Torx T6 security bit to remove the following three T6 screws from the logic board:

    • Two T6 screws (923-10091) (1)

    • One T6 screw (923-10090) (2)

  14. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-10089) from the logic board.

  15. Peel the thermal duct cover from the fan (1). Then gently fold back the thermal duct cover and flex cables. Use Kapton tape to hold them back as shown.

    • Caution

      • Don’t strain the flex cables. Loosely tape them back so you can easily lift the logic board.

      • Don’t tape back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (2).

  16. Use the black stick to slightly lift the edge of the logic board as shown.

  17. Hold the sides of the logic board and gently tilt it up (1). Then slide the logic board out of the top case (2). Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (3) as you remove the logic board.

    • Caution

      • Don't remove the heat sink from the logic board.

Reassembly

 Caution: If you're installing a replacement logic board, don't discard the packaging and stiffeners. The packaging and stiffeners must be transferred to the original logic board before returning to Apple Service to prevent damage during shipping.

Important:

  1. Follow the removal and reassembly steps to install a replacement Touch ID board.

  2. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully loosen the three captive #00 Phillips screws from the top stiffener on the replacement logic board.

  3. Lift the top stiffener off the replacement logic board and set it aside.

  4. Lift the replacement logic board off the bottom stiffener and set it aside.

  5. Position the original logic board over the bottom stiffener. Align the screw holes in the logic board with the screw holes in the bottom stiffener.

    • Note: The bottom stiffener is marked with 'BR'

  6. Position the top stiffener on the original logic board. Align the screw holes in the top stiffener with the screw holes in the original logic board.

    • Note: The top stiffener is marked with 'TR'

  7. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully reinstall the three captive #00 Phillips screws.

    • Important: The captive screws in the top stiffener install through the screw holes of the logic board and into the screw holes in the bottom stiffener.

  8. Place the original logic board inside the reused ESD-safe packaging.

  9. Position the packaged logic board in the foam frame.

  10. Close and seal the box. Ship the box to Apple Service.

  11. Ensure that the thermal duct cover and flex cables are folded back and secured with Kapton tape.

  12. Use the black stick to fold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (1). Hold the logic board by the edges. Tilt down the edge of the logic board to position it in the top case (2). Then lower the logic board into the top case (3).

  13. Gently remove the Kapton tape from the thermal duct cover and flex cables. Position the thermal duct cover and press to adhere it to the heat sink (1).

  14. Keep the T6 security bit in the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 0.4 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to reinstall the three T6 screws in the order shown:

    • One T6 screw (923-10091) (1)

    • One T6 screw (923-10091) (2)

    • One T6 screw (923-10090) (3)

  15. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-10089).

  16. Insert the 5IP bit in the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 20.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the following 5IP screws:

    • One 5IP screw (923-10092) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07037) (2)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-08687) (3)

  17. Keep the 5IP bit in the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 17.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall one 5IP screw (923-10092).

  18. Keep the 5IP bit in the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 28 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall two 5IP screws (923-07039).

  19. Tuck only the folded section of the display flex cables (length of the flex cable closest to the display) into the gap between the display and internal frame.

  20. Position the display cable bumpers in the internal frame and over the bends in the display flex cables as shown.

  21. Align the display flex cable clips around the edge of the display cable bumpers (1). Then insert the display flex cables into the gap between the internal frame and logic board (2).

  22. Press the display flex cable clips down over the bumpers and onto the internal frame.

  23. Press the ends of the three display flex cables to the connectors on the logic board.

  24. Slide the ends of the following six flex cables into the connectors:

    • Microphone flex cable (1)

    • Left speaker flex cable (2)

    • Fan flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (4)

    • Keyboard flex cable (5)

    • Right speaker flex cable (6)

  25. Use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the locking levers. Then press the polyester film tabs to the ends of the six flex cables (1-6).

  26. Press and hold the fan flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board.

  27. Press the ends of the following five flex cables to the connectors on the logic board:

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (1)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (2)

    • USB-C boards flex cables (3, 4)

    • Audio board flex cable (5)

  28. Press the end of the Touch ID board flex cable to the connector on the logic board.

  29. Position the following seven cowlings over the connectors on the logic board:

    • Touch ID board connector cowling (1)

    • Display connector cowling (2)

    • Display connector cowling (3)

    • Lid angle sensor connector cowling (4)

    • MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (5)

    • Left USB-C boards connectors cowling (6)

      • Important: Make sure the padded side left USB-C boards connectors cowling is facing up as shown.

    • Audio board connector cowling (7)

  30. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall 15 3IP screws into the seven cowlings (1-7).

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) (1)

    • 13 3IP screws (923-06854) (2-7)

  31. Press the Touch ID board flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board.
