iPhone 17 USB-C Connector

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Crosshead 100 mm half-moon bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Super screw 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Super screw 50 mm bit

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (orange, 0.85 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (teal, 0.75 kgf cm)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

  • USB-C charge cable

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Important: Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove two trilobe screws from the logic board lower cowling. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the logic board lower cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and the back glass flex cable (2) from the connectors.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

    • Lift the ends of the SIM assembly flex cable (4) and the USB-C connector flex cables (3, 5) from the connectors.

    • Remove three trilobe screws.

    • Remove the back glass.

  2. Remove the battery.

  3. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove 10 crosshead screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the SIM assembly spacer.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine cowling.

    • Remove the bottom speaker.

  4. Lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector. Remove the Taptic Engine.

  5. Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove six super screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Caution: Don’t bend back the flex cables more than 90 degrees.

    • Remove the SIM assembly.

      • Ensure that the standin remains on the SIM assembly when you remove it.

    • Remove the main microphone.

  6. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove three trilobe screws from the USB-C connector.

  7. Use a torque driver and the long crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the USB-C connector.

    • Peel the USB-C connector flex cable from the enclosure.

    • Remove the USB-C connector.

Reassembly

Warning

Installing only new batteries is recommended. Used battery cells can become damaged during the removal process. Read Battery Safety to learn more.

  1. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all residual adhesive from the enclosure, the microphone 4 area, and the USB-C connector port. Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean these areas.

  2. Ensure that the two grounding clips are still intact. If they have fallen off or shifted, use ESD-safe tweezers to reposition them.

    • Note: The grounding springs on the grounding clips face the display side of the iPhone.

  3. Remove all the adhesive liners from the replacement USB-C connector, making note of the areas where adhesive is present.

  4. Insert a USB-C charge cable into the port on the iPhone. Position the USB-C connector in the enclosure. Then press the USB-C connector into the USB-C charge cable for proper alignment.

    • Warning: Ensure that the USB-C charge cable isn’t plugged into a power source.

  5. Align the screw holes. Then press the USB-C connector flex cable to the enclosure, paying close attention to the areas where adhesive is present.

    • Important

      • Don’t press the attached microphone 4 into place yet.

      • To avoid damaging surrounding parts, wearing gloves is recommended.

  6. Use the teal torque driver and long crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-13871) into the USB-C connector.

    • Caution: Keep the torque driver at a low angle to avoid stripping the screws.

  7. Remove the USB-C charge cable.

  8. Align the microphone 4 to the left of the speaker seal. Use the black stick to press the microphone 4 into the small indented area in the enclosure.

  9. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install three new trilobe screws into the USB-C connector.

    • Two screws (923-13859) (1)

    • One screw (923-13860) (2)

  10. Use the orange torque driver and super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-13852) into the enclosure.

  11. Reinstall the SIM assembly.

  12. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and super screw bit to install two super screws into the SIM assembly.

  13. Reinstall the SIM assembly spacer.

  14. Use the teal torque driver and super screw bit to install one super screw (923-13857) into the SIM assembly spacer.

  15. Use the blue torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13990) into the SIM assembly spacer.

  16. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-13861) into the SIM assembly spacer.

  17. Press the ends of the SIM assembly flex cable and two USB-C connector flex cables to the connectors.

  18. Adhere the main microphone adhesive to the enclosure. Ensure that the alignment of the holes is precise. Press the adhesive for 15 seconds before reinstalling the main microphone.
