About classes, assignments, and files in Schoolwork
Schoolwork automatically populates the sidebar with all your classes and, depending on the view you select, displays assignments associated with a specific class (class view) or all active (Due Next view) or submitted and completed (Done view) assignments. Assignments provide a way for your teachers to share information or homework activities with you. For example, your teacher might send you and your entire class an assignment with instructions to watch an attached movie, submit an essay, or complete a task in an app. For each of your classes, Schoolwork automatically creates a class folder within the Schoolwork folder in iCloud Drive.
If no classes appear in the sidebar or if you want to change any of your student information, contact your teacher.
Note: You can view the status of Schoolwork at the bottom of the sidebar and swipe down in the sidebar, Due Next, Done, or class views to update Schoolwork content and status messages.
Your classes
Your assignments
Use the Due Next and Done views to see all assignments across all your classes. The Due Next and Done views display all your assignments, with the assignments your teachers recently updated listed first.
In the Schoolwork app
, tap Due Next or Done in the sidebar.
Your files
For each of your classes, Schoolwork automatically creates a class folder within the Schoolwork folder in iCloud Drive.
In the Files app
, tap iCloud Drive, then tap Schoolwork.
Schoolwork automatically organizes assignment files within your Schoolwork class folder in iCloud Drive. When a teacher shares a file in an assignment, Schoolwork automatically saves the file in an [assignment title] folder within your Schoolwork class folder using the following format: [family name given name - original filename].
For example, if your name is Daren Estrada and your teacher shares a Pages file named Integers Investigation in an assignment named Integers in your Mathematics class, then Schoolwork names the file Estrada Daren - Integers Investigation. The file is stored in a subfolder with the same name as the assignment, Integers, within the Mathematics folder in the Schoolwork folder.
Schoolwork > Mathematics > Integers > Estrada Daren - Integers Investigation
Sharing files
When your teacher shares a file using “Each student can edit their own file” or when you submit work to an assignment, Schoolwork saves the file in your [assignment title] folder within your Schoolwork class folder, and saves a copy to your teacher’s [assignment title] folder. Schoolwork names the files:
[family name given name - original filename] (for a file your teacher shared using “Each student can edit their own file”)
[family name given name - YYYYMMDD - activity name] (for a file you submitted to an assignment)
When editing a shared non-iWork file, confirm all your changes are saved. iCloud Drive might overwrite changes if another student or teacher edits the file while you’re editing the same file.
Deleting files
Apple recommends using Schoolwork to remove files. If you do remove a Schoolwork file in iCloud Drive, be aware that Schoolwork can’t access or recover the file.
