Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • #00 Phillips screwdriver

    • Note: Required only if installing a replacement logic board.

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Kapton tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

  • Torx T6 security bit

Caution

Note: The logic board service video provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for removing and reinstalling the logic board.

Removal

  1. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the 17 3IP screws from the following eight cowlings:

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the right USB-C board connector cowling (1)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) from the Touch ID board connector cowling (2)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-06854) from the display connector cowlings (3, 4)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the lid angle sensor connector cowling (5)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (6)

    • Three 3IP screws (923-06854) from the left USB-C boards connector cowling (7)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the audio board connector cowling (8)

  2. Remove the eight cowlings (1–8) and save them for reassembly.

  3. Use the black stick to lift the ends of the following 10 flex cables off the connectors on the logic board:

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (1)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (2)

    • Display backlight power flex cable (3)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (4)

    • Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) flex cable (5)

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (6)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (7)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (8, 9)

    • Audio board flex cable (10)

  4. Gently peel the Touch ID board flex cable from the logic board.

  5. Lift the display flex cable clips off the internal frame of the top case. Gently fold them back over the edge of the top case to reveal the display flex cable bumpers underneath.

  6. Lift the display flex cable bumpers out of the top case. Save them for reassembly.

  7. Gently peel back the polyester film tab on the end of the fan flex cable (1). Then use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the connector (2).

  8. Spread the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the fan flex cable. Gently slide the tweezer tip under the flex cable to loosen the adhesive between the flex cable and logic board.

    • Caution

      • Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

      • Don't touch any of the small components on the logic board or fan flex cable.

  9. Slide the end of the fan flex cable out of the connector.

  10. Gently peel back the polyester film tabs from the ends of the following five flex cables:

    • Right speaker flex cable (1)

    • Microphone flex cable (2)

    • Left speaker flex cable (3)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (4)

    • Keyboard flex cable (5)

  11. Use the black stick to flip up the locking levers of the five flex cables (1–5). Then slide the ends of the five flex cables out of the connectors.

  12. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the following four 5IP screws from the logic board:

    • Two 5IP screws (923-07037) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-08687) (2)

  13. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove two 5IP screws (923-11075) from the logic board.

  14. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove two 5IP screws (923-07039) from the logic board.

  15. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to remove the following three 6IP screws from the logic board in the order shown:

    • One 6IP screw (923-10091) (1)

    • One 6IP screw (923-10091) (2)

    • One 6IP screw (923-11074) (3)

  16. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-10089) from the logic board.

  17. Peel the fan duct cover from the fan (1). Then gently fold back the fan duct cover and flex cables. Use Kapton tape to hold them back as shown.

    • Caution

      • Don’t strain the flex cables. Loosely tape them back so you can easily lift the logic board.

      • Don’t tape back the trackpad and battery management unit (BMU) flex cables (2).

  18. Use the black stick to slightly lift the edge of the logic board as shown.

  19. Hold the sides of the logic board and gently tilt it up (1). Then slide the logic board out of the top case (2). Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (3) as you remove the logic board.

    • Caution

      • Don't remove the heat sink from the logic board.

Reassembly

Caution: If you're installing a replacement logic board, don't discard the packaging and stiffeners. The packaging and stiffeners must be transferred to the original logic board before returning to Apple Service to prevent damage during shipping.

Important

  • If you're reinstalling the existing logic board, skip to reassembly step 11.

  • If you're installing a replacement logic board, complete all reassembly steps.

  1. Follow the removal and reassembly steps to install a replacement Touch ID board.

  2. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully loosen the three captive #00 Phillips screws from the top stiffener on the replacement logic board.

  3. Lift the top stiffener off the replacement logic board and set it aside.

  4. Lift the replacement logic board off the bottom stiffener and set it aside.

  5. Position the existing logic board over the bottom stiffener. Align the screw holes in the logic board with the screw holes in the bottom stiffener.

    • Note: The bottom stiffener is marked with 'BR'

  6. Position the top stiffener on the existing logic board. Align the screw holes in the top stiffener with the screw holes in the existing logic board.

    • Note: The top stiffener is marked with 'TR'

  7. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully reinstall the three captive #00 Phillips screws.

    • Important: The captive screws in the top stiffener install through the screw holes of the logic board and into the screw holes in the bottom stiffener.

  8. Place the existing logic board inside the reused ESD-safe packaging.

  9. Position the packaged logic board in the foam frame.

  10. Close and seal the box. Ship the box to Apple Service.

  11. Ensure that the fan duct cover and flex cables are folded back and secured with Kapton tape.

  12. Use the black stick to fold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (1). Hold the logic board by the edges. Tilt down the edge of the logic board to position it in the top case (2). Then lower the logic board into the top case (3).

  13. Gently remove the Kapton tape from the fan duct cover and flex cables. Position the fan duct cover and press to adhere it to the heat sink (1).

  14. Ensure that the torque value on the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver is set to 0.4 Nm. Use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to reinstall the three 6IP screws into the logic board in the order shown:

    • One 6IP screw (923-10091) (1)

    • One 6IP screw (923-10091) (2)

    • One 6IP screw (923-11074) (3)

  15. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-10089) into the logic board.

  16. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 20.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the following four 5IP screws into the logic board:

    • Two 5IP screw (923-07037) (1)

    • Two 5IP screws (923-08687) (2)

  17. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 17.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall two 5IP screws (923-11075) into the logic board.

  18. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 28 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall two 5IP screws (923-07039) into the logic board.

  19. Tuck only the folded section of the display flex cables (length of the flex cable closest to the display) into the gap between the display and internal frame.

  20. Position the display flex cable bumpers in the internal frame and over the bends in the display flex cables as shown.

  21. Align the display flex cable clips around the edge of the display flex cable bumpers (1). Then insert the display flex cables into the gap between the internal frame and logic board (2).

  22. Press the display flex cable clips down over the bumpers and onto the internal frame.

  23. Slide the ends of the following six flex cables into the connectors:

    • Right speaker flex cable (1)

    • Microphone flex cable (2)

    • Left speaker flex cable (3)

    • Fan flex cable (4)

    • Keyboard backlight flex cable (5)

    • Keyboard flex cable (6)

  24. Use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the six locking levers (1–6). Then press the polyester film tabs to the ends of the six flex cables.

  25. Press and hold the fan flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board.

  26. Press the ends of the following 10 flex cables to the connectors on the logic board:

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (1)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (2)

    • Display backlight power flex cable (3)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (4)

    • eDP flex cable (5)

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (6)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (7)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (8, 9)

    • Audio board flex cable (10)

  27. Position the eight cowlings (1–8) over the connectors on the logic board.

  28. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the 17 3IP screws into the following eight cowlings:

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) into the right USB-C board connector cowling (1)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) into the Touch ID board connector cowling (2)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-06854) into the display connector cowlings (3, 4)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) into the lid angle sensor connector cowling (5)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) into the MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (6)

    • Three 3IP screws (923-06854) into the left USB-C boards connector cowling (7)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) into the audio board connector cowling (8)

  29. Press the Touch ID board flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board.
