About course types in iTunes U for web
Using the iTunes U dashboard, you can create both in-session and self-paced courses.

In-session | In-session courses are courses taught in real time with calendar-based posts and assignments. You must provide specific start and end dates for the course. For a course copy, by default, if the original course start date is today or in the future, iTunes U uses the same dates. If the original course start date is in the past, iTunes U sets the start date to today and calculates the end date based on the original course. | ||||||||||
Self-paced | Self-paced courses allow students to begin and end a course at any time. Your course outline provides the structure, allowing students to follow along at their own pace. You must provide a suggested duration for the course. The duration should indicate the approximate amount of time, in weeks, you expect students to take to complete the course. For a course copy, by default, iTunes U calculates the duration based on the original course, rounded to the nearest week. |
Note: Apple recommends creating no more than 500 courses per Apple ID. To optimize bandwidth and performance when you have an excessive number of courses, iTunes U might not display all your courses.
