Specify NIS settings
Using Directory Utility, you can create a configuration that specifies how a Mac accesses a Network Information Service (NIS) domain.
Click Services.
Click the lock icon.
Enter an administrator’s user name and password, then click Modify Configuration (or use Touch ID).
Select NIS, then click the Edit button (looks like a pencil).
Enter the NIS domain name, the DNS host name, or the IP address of the server where the NIS domain resides.
Include the NIS server’s host name or IP address if it is required for security or if the server is not on the same subnet as the computer you’re configuring.
If you don’t specify a server, NIS uses a broadcast protocol to discover an NIS server on the subnet.
Select “Use NIS domain for authentication,” then click OK.
The NIS domain is added to the computer’s authentication search policy as /NIS/domain, where domain is the name you entered in step 5.
