Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra) Front USB-C Ports

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Mac Electrical Safety and follow workspace handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 25 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

  • USB-C charge cable

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Position the computer so the back ports are facing you.

  2. If the model you’re repairing is configured with an SSD module near the front USB-C ports, follow the removal steps in SSD Modules (Flash Storage). Then continue to step 3. If no SSD module is installed in this location, continue to step 3.

  3. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to fully loosen the 5IP screw on the front USB-C ports bracket. Remove the bracket and save it for reassembly.

    • Note: The 5IP screw is captive and stays attached to the front USB-C ports bracket.

  4. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to remove two 3IP screws (923-12499) from the front USB-C ports connector cowling.

  5. Remove the front USB-C ports connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

  6. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the end of the front USB-C ports flex cable off the connector.

  7. Stand the computer on its front with the back ports facing up.

  8. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove two 5IP screws (923-12491) from the front USB-C ports.

  9. Lift the front USB-C ports out of the housing.

Reassembly

  1. Insert the front USB-C ports into the openings in the housing.

  2. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to partially reinstall two 5IP screws (923-12491) into the front USB-C ports.

  3. Position the computer so the back ports are facing you.

  4. Press the end of the front USB-C ports flex cable to the connector.

  5. Position the front USB-C ports connector cowling over the end of the front USB-C ports flex cable. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 15 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-12499) into the cowling.

  6. Align the two pins on the front USB-C ports bracket with the two holes in the front USB-C ports. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to partially reinstall the captive 5IP screw on the bracket.

  7. Position the computer so the front ports face you.

  8. Plug both ends of a USB-C cable into the front USB-C ports to ensure front USB-C ports alignment. Adjust the alignment of the USB-C ports until both ends of the USB-C charge cable are easy to insert and remove.

  9. Position the computer so the rear ports face you.

  10. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 17.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to fully reinstall two 5IP screws.

  11. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 34 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to fully reinstall the captive 5IP screw into the front USB-C bracket.

  12. If you removed an SSD module to access the front USB-C ports, follow the reassembly steps in SSD Modules (Flash Storage) to reinstall it.
