Use a Managed Apple ID with iTunes U
Learn about the differences between using a personal Apple ID and a Managed Apple ID with iTunes U.
Like with your personal Apple ID, you can use a Managed Apple ID to:
Sign in to a personal device
Sign in to a shared device
Access Apple services like iCloud, iTunes U, and Apple School Manager
Unlike your personal Apple IDs, a school or district owns and controls Managed Apple IDs. The organization can reset passwords, limit purchases and communications, and set up role-based administration.
Managed Apple IDs and iTunes U managed courses
When you use a Managed Apple ID to create an iTunes U course, it’s a managed course. iTunes U automatically affiliates you with the organization that’s specified in Apple School Manager.
You can't edit the course organization that’s associated with your Apple School Manager organization.
Your Managed Apple ID is automatically affiliated with your Apple School Manager organization. iTunes U provides unlimited storage space for course materials and can accept more than 50 enrolled students.
iTunes U course enrollment and student roster
The instructor who creates a managed course has to use a Managed Apple ID. The students who enroll also have to use Managed Apple IDs. The instructor and the students have be part of the same Apple School Manager organization.
When you use a Managed Apple ID to create a course, you can add all the enrolled students to the managed class automatically. As long as the class information has been imported into Apple School Manager, just select Use Apple School, then select your class list. If any class information changes, like a student is added, iTunes U updates your course enrollment when it syncs.
If you choose Create a New Course, you can manually enter information about the course. To add students, import classes from Apple School Manager or let the students use an enrollment code to enroll manually.
Move a course to your Managed Apple ID
After you use a personal Apple ID to create an iTunes U course, your organization might switch to Apple School Manager and Managed Apple IDs. If this happens, send a copy of the course to your Managed Apple ID to change it to a managed course.
iTunes U creates a snapshot of your original course, including all its info pages, posts, and materials. It doesn’t change anything. If students are enrolled in the original course, iTunes U removes them from the snapshot of the course.
Course contributors
If you use a personal Apple ID as your primary Apple ID, you can add yourself as a contributor for a managed course. A student who’s enrolled in a managed course can’t be a course contributor.
