iCloud Keychain SMS support by country and region

If you don't use two-factor authentication, learn how to set up iCloud Keychain with SMS. If your country or region isn’t listed, you can set up iCloud keychain without an SMS-capable phone number.

If your Apple ID is protected by two-factor authentication, you don't need a separate SMS verification number for iCloud Keychain.

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > [your name], then tap Password & Security.

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. Click Apple ID, then click Password & Security in the sidebar. If you're using macOS Mojave or earlier, click iCloud. Then click Account Details.

If two-factor authentication is turned on, this article doesn't apply. Learn more about iCloud Keychain.

Set up iCloud Keychain without an SMS-capable phone number

If your country or region isn't listed above, SMS verification isn't available in your country or region. You can still use iCloud Keychain by following these steps:

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, and tap Keychain.

  2. Enter your Apple ID password.

  3. When asked if you want to use your device passcode as the iCloud Security Code, tap Create Different Code.

  4. Tap Advanced Options, then choose one of these options:

    • Get a Random Security Code.

    • Don't Create Security Code. If you don’t create an iCloud Security Code, then your iCloud Keychain is stored locally on your device instead of Apple's servers, and will update only across your approved devices.

  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete iCloud Keychain setup.

On your Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Apple ID. If you're using macOS Mojave or earlier, you don't need to click Apple ID.

  2. Click iCloud, then select Keychain.

  3. Enter your Apple ID password.

  4. Click Advanced, then choose one of these two options:

    • Get a Random Security Code.

    • Don't Create Security Code. If you don't create an iCloud Security Code, then your iCloud Keychain is stored locally on your Mac instead of Apple's servers, and will update only across your approved devices.

  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete iCloud Keychain setup.
